I recently bought a used Harman P61A pellet stove and am doing some cleaning and giving it the once over before installing it. I took the auger out to clean it and the chute. When I removed it, there was high temp rtv sealing it and part of an old O-ring appeared as I scraped it off. The O-ring was not complete so I'm guessing someone slathered on the rtv to seal it and called it good. I have looked everywhere for info on the auger and if it actually requires an O-ring, but nothing shows one or if it should even be sealed with rtv...In the picture there is a groove machined on both sides of the auger bearing that may hold an O-ring. Does anyone have any idea if an O-ring or rtv is required to seal it where the auger slides into the pipe?

I can only guess that it is older than 2008...The old brochure I got with it had a dealer name on it so I emailed them for help on backtracking the serial number to find out the year...They said they cant do that, so I remain lost as to the age...it is in great shape though, so I believe it will last for years with proper cleaning and maintenance.

I have the same door on a PC45. I wouldn't worry about the age either. I found no o ring when I tore it down last winter or the other two I have been intimate with. Over use of silicone yes. Dealers should be able to find out the age for you. If you have it that far apart I would replace the door gaskets, preferably with graphite impregnated rope material. Swab of graphite grease on the door hinges will make them swing nice. Enjoy

Hey, you didn't happen to buy that in the spring from someone in Weare who was moving to Florida did you?

@ Bioburner & smwilliamson Thanks for the replies...didn't think an O-ring belonged there, but had to ask...
@ bogieb I got it off CL in northern Mass...Guy buys and resells them...he said he got it from the neighborhood...How do you like your Harman?

Love the P61A! Loved it so much, bought a used PP38++ (basically a P43) this spring. Once I sell the St. Croix, the baby Harman will be my main floor stove.

A simple way to find out when your stove was manufactured is to contact Harman via their Facebook page and tell them your serial number. I got a response within two days.

I am wishing for 12 weeks. We have been trending colder here though. 64 in the house this morning. 61 outside. Only 3 ninety degree days here so far this summer. Local crops look very good. Wheat harvest should start today. Corn prices have been going down at a pretty fast rate so may if I stay in MN for winter be burning a lot of corn again but propain looks to be very cheap and sure is no work.

I finally emailed Harman directly and after a few emails, I finally found out it was built in 2002 and not in 2009 as I was told by the guy I bought it from...It is in great shape, so I am hoping the age doesn't matter too much...now that I found cracks in my wood stove, as I posted elsewhere, I maybe relying more on this pellet stove this fall..._g

Will post some when I finish cleaning and putting it back together...==c

Probably only difference would be in the stove control and the algorithms. Get ready to replace the pot switches or do it now in the off season. Probably want to collect a list of where to get fan and auger motors for if they fail.:( I would be real leery of the combustion fan because of the age and of course its a real pain to replace.

I just got an email back from seller...he apologized and offers to buy it back for what I paid him for it...I'm leaning towards selling it back and eating the cost of fuel to drive it back to him, and then looking for a newer stove...any opinions??

How much did you pay? I have a 10 year old and a 12 year old Harman P61. After installing a few new parts, the only difference between mine and a brand new one is, I have the heavy duty iron fines box cover and the new ones are steel! So after some paint, it looks like brand new out of the box and works like brand new.

I paid $2400 with the vent...they go for a premium around here as everyone seems to want a Harman...I wouldn't have paid that much if I knew it was over 13 yrs old...my bad for not knowing more about what I was buying...there is a much newer P68 on CL for 2800 and has the gold trim...

That is the going rate now for those P61s. The age does not matter much since they are built so well. I would still recommend some spare parts like an exhaust blower and a room blower going into the winter. Even though they do not break down much it seems to happen at night or on a weekend! LOL

I would return it. That is way too much for that old of a stove. If it was 2008 or newer, maybe. But there are deals out there if you hop on them before the refurbishers offer their usual 600-1000.

Not the Hampton Falls guy, he is in Newburyport, but I do believe he told me that is his brother...

Often times he posts on CL as Hampton Falls and folks get confused that it is Home and Hearth....which it clearly isn't when you hear some of the stories...
