A little background - one of my two system pumps (Wilo 16FX) occasionally started making a high pitched whine every few days, while running. I found that if I just cycle the pump on/off or to a different speed and back the whine stops; but nonetheless, it's been concerning me enough to either replace or at least make sure I have a backup on hand. After watching ebay for a while, I picked up two B&G Ecocirc Auto's and figured rather than having them sit on the shelf collecting dust, I'd install them and put the other two on the shelf for backup.
Without having any ability to measure flow, and without firing the boiler, I wanted to test the power consumption of my old setup (Taco 007 and Wilo 16FX) to the new pumps. Depending on the speed settings, the old pumps consumed a combined power of 135-155 watts. The new pumps - 20-30 watts. I figure I should save at least $10 per month over the old pumps and can now be much more confident that my backup power supply (2 large car batteries) will give me sufficient run time during a power outage.
