We've just had a new Morso 8142 installed. I wasn't there during installation, so couldn't ask what this part is:

Anyone know? Thanks.

That could be. The opening looks like a slot to accept a tapered screw head, but that doesn't make any sense. I guess I could ask the dealer.

What about using it to adjust rotating embers grate?

I believe that is a riddling handle. Why Morso includes it in non-multifuel US versions is unknown. It's useless for them.

The ashpan has its own handle. It's the operating handle for the riddling grate on some models.

Jmatz, it may work for the rotating embers grate. Morso calls it the riddling grate (part 35) on your model. Give it a try and let us know how it works on the 8142.

Some of the US manuals call it out in the parts list. Others don't mention it.

The hole is so you can hang it on the hook mounted under the stove, if whoever put the stove together bothered to mount the hook on one of the leg bolts.
I use the tool to riddle the grate to put wood ash in the pan without opening the door, wait a few seconds for any floating ash to settle, then use it to remove the ash pan if it needs to be emptied. No ash anywhere it's not supposed to be and you can do it while the stove is hot.

Thanks everyone. I will reply with results when I have a chance to play with the 8142

There is no mention of when to use the riddling grate in the instructions. Do you leave it fully closed until dropping ashes into ash pan, or is it also used partially open for air circulation under wood?

That's a good question. I'm not sure about your stove having never burned in one, but in general for wood stoves the grates are not designed to have air supplied under the fire. Normally one gets best results from having a bed of ash under the fire so I would leave it closed unless you want to open it to reduce accumulation by shaking or riddling the grate. Then return it to its closed position.

In my Morso 1410 the grate is open and a small amount of air is allowed to go under the grate as the door does not quite seal against the front of it. When "riddling" you are turning the center plate of the grate about 10 degrees back and forth. The only thing preventing air from rushing through the grate is the retained ash layer. IMG_1211.JPG

Good info Squirrel. I'll be up at my buddy's yurt next week with the 2110 and will check it out.

OK - got back to the house to take another look at the stove. There is a rod which connects to the grate, and the pin on the mysterious tool fits into a hole in the rod, so that is definitely what that end of the tool is for. I guess the perpendicular edge at the other end is to hook the ash pan to begin pulling it out.
Basically a multi-tool for the stove. Not sure what the slot in the tool is for - probably works with other models.

Cool, thanks for the update. The 2110 in the yurt had a fire in it all weekend and I didn't get to check it out.
