Good stuff on this thread. My kids are well versed in CSS wood and all. It's a requirement here as well. That's the problem nowadays. Everyone thinks stuff is free and requires no work.

Kids need to stay busy and work within reason IMO. It teaches them how the world really functions. Too many youth now think the world is only whatever damn electronic device they have their face stuffed in at that given moment. Ridiculous........ They could ALL use a belt and attitude adjustment.

Of course, the little hard working plumber dude above is exempt. No saggin ass $hit there,,,,,,,,,,,, he was clearly working his off. He was too busy to pull them up. Now get off of his ass (LOL!) and back to work. He does not have time for your BS!:p

Here's a pic of my daughter stacking wood. Being the eternal drama queen, she asked "how many trees have to die?!?!".

My kind, sensitive, GREEN reply was "all of them."

So my 5 year old , at bed time asks if he can play a game on my iPad. I said no, it's time for bed......he did offer to pay me 50 cents if I let him play....... I declined his offer....

you paid them? I tell mine if they want to eat they have to work. If its a bigger job i'll throw in some ice cream tho. Be damned if my kids are going to grow up lazy or feeling entitled.

Yeah, a quarter here and there, a buck or two for bigger jobs. They are 5 and going on 7. Paying them teaches how to save up for a goal, manage money, delay gratification, etc. They are saving up for Lego sets. We do throw some money in the pot after they go to sleep. They tend to take care of toys better when they paid for them.

Work is good for us, not to be avoided, but to be pursued. In this day and age, most are obsessed with entertainment and leisure. It is all complete garbage and nonsense..turning our kids into little drama queens and gossips.

Besides, most of their friends will never know how to do anything. My kids will all know the basics of keeping up a house, fixing a car, putting meat on the table, shooting guns and self defense. This includes my daughter. I'm an equal opportunity employer. :)
And of course the art of riding a motorcycle. :)

Character is formed at home.

I learned splitting firewood at the cottage in Canada. When I bought my first house 35 years ago, I installed a woodstove. In the three house since I have always heated with wood. My gills helped some.....my grandkids are great!!

safety first. start'em off small and use PPE!

I pay my boys for certain jobs, but for keeping the house clean, work in the garden, and wood duty their labor is mine. In exchange they get a very nice place to live, food to eat, and to be warm in the winter!

Hey, where's the cutting pants and eye protection ... steel toes!:p ;lol
Best that children get some understanding of the work required to maintain a home. As your children have gotten older, have there been any discussions on heating with wood vs. other means and the costing that goes with it?

Good luck with that. Easier said then done, Just sayen. I do hope you are successful though.

Nothing wrong with child labor. My family has burnt wood for as long as I've been around. I can remember going out and dropping whole trees with dad. My sister, mom, and myself would pull brush as dad would run the saw. I would always be the one to help him split and stack after everything was back home.

I'm imperfect, just like my kids.
My parents raised me with an emphasis on education and I taught myself everything hands-on..and I'm by no means done learning. I plan on raising my kids a little more balanced between education and technical.

Technical and education are the best combination IMHO. It's great to be able to do but when it comes to the job market, you need that diploma or certificate to verify your abilities.... Then again, as individuals, some children are better doing and some are better with the education ... all depends on the child.

Slave those little ones until Social Workers show up at your door and tell you to ease up. LOL! Then you will know you have worked 'em to their full potential.:)

It's been my experience that folks come 80% complete out of the box on character. I'm sure you've seen it, some kids are naturally organized, hard workers, some are slackers.

My kids have been processing for years. I have a son who is 10 and a daughter who is 14. My son looks miserable when he has to help process which I dont appreciate. Every once in awhile I see him smile and forget that he is laboring. He does stack nice though, nice and loose and even with the rest of the pile, bark up etc. I think he will come around when hes a bit older. My daughter is more mature of course and trucks on like a trooper.

IMAG5660_1.jpg Great pics of the kids working!
Hope you all had a great summer. No wood stacking yet, but the driveway washed out recently. Downside? I'm starting to lose the fights over the remote!
