Apparently we could all be millionaires!

This is being sold at a Canadian furniture store.

According to the guy who posted this photo it is so expensive because:

It would take years to air dry a chunk that large properly. Not drying it properly means that it would have huge splits in it called checks. You can see one tiny one in this piece but that's pretty good for a log that still has the pith. Alternatively you could dry it in a kiln which would be much faster, also much more expensive and require additional human power to move in and out of the kiln.

Due to this, hardwood is more expensive the thicker it gets. If this is two feet tall by 1 foot around it would be 113.1429 * 24 / 144 # => 18 board feet. Let's say the raw material is cheap $1.5 a BF, that would be $27.

The two sides were worked to look "hewn", that's not a machine cut. Materials + work hours including transportation and storage probably brings this to around $50. Retail usually doubles the raw price.

It seems like everyone who is getting upset about this has never tried to buy a large piece of wood before
.

What do you think?

!8 board feet?; oh well why didn't you say so? haha

IDK, some guy made a million selling pet rocks so who's the idiot?

At some point, after months of "justifying" the price, he'll pack up his precious stump and take it home.

Hey, we'll try and make a dollar off anything....;em

He really is taking the PITH.

bob

Maybe if it were Brazilian rosewood, ebony, etc. As for a 'stump'... I think I'll pass.

For that price he shoulda put some varnish on it LOL.........

And a cushion for my delicate tush!

Wow, at that rate I could retire 20 years early off that 5000 # Oak log that I was gonna CSS and burn! !!!

Wait a minute guys. I'm ready to be a multi-millionaire. I don't own a splitter so all of my stumps are "hand crafted" on top of all his claims. Should be able to get close to $200 each for that added touch.

Converting a stump into board feet.. that's a new one. I like his enthusiasm.

Does he not know what makes board feet, board feet?

If I have a couple beers while hand splitting, I also make hewn pieces, I guess I'm a natural. Finally I'm good at making something that is valuable, can't wait to tell mom and dad.

"Accidentally" drop the business end of your x27 on it while nobody's looking.

or double the price since being split in half would make it a "sectional" ;lol

Some sucker with more money than sense will come along and buy it.

Kinda like putting the word "Amish" in front of "furniture". It ain't furniture and it sure as heck ain't Amish-made... but it is a novelty. Like sex, novelty sells.

Cookie clocks are another example of this. Cut a thin stump cookie, drill a hole in the center and install a quartz clock. People buy 'em. :)

you guys knock this.... try it in the city were people no longer have access to this stuff (We know they could but you know what I mean) I bet we all could make a few bucks off this.... There is a consignment store in the city here... I am going to take a few rounds, dry then and then work a little design into them etc... and see what I can get from some wood.

I laughed when I saw the OP as much as anybody. Then I took this photo in the Lazy Boy store today and it's completely in earnest!! I'm going to wait until it's half-price...
