Found a great stove paint

We use a lot of spray paint over the course of a year here in the shop and on jobs. I have to say, I'm really not very happy with Forrest Ind. and their #1990 Satin Black. The cans are always clogging up the nozzle with some bit of crap that's in the cans. It's kinda like rubber cement and it seems no matter how much we shake the cans it never completely dissolves. Cans may be dead on arrival or they start to clog mid way through a job and either stop altogether or spit, spatter, drip, leak, explode, tips get clogged, spray goes sideways...it's a mess.

When the cans work, I love the finish. We do a lot of installs with Duravent and the #1990 Satin matches the black finish on thimbles, support boxes and the like nearly 100%. Additionally, they also make a #2330 touch up version which is the same finish but 60% opaque, this makes the touch-up finish nearly 100% to the full finish so you can hit a spot on venting or a stove without having to paint the whole piece. However, the #2330 has the same issues with the clogging and we often end up painting the entire surface again because it spits and spatters. Wicked frustrating. It's weird too because we never have any issues with any of the metallic finishes. Just the Satin and touch-up.

The Satin and the touch-up version work great on so many stoves and venting parts it kinda like a necessary evil we just have to deal with all the time. I cannot tell you how many can we have bought that were just totally useless. It like 1 or two cans out of 6 actually work.

I've tried many other types of paint. Rust-o-leum makes a great high-heat grill paint that flows terrific, is a true blue-based black but it's a super flat. Just touching it leaves a mark. In pinch we will use that cause we can get it but it looks gray compared to anything black with a slight sheen. Engine enamels and the like are often a red based black or are a semi-gloss which is just too high of a sheen. they also take too long to dry and are ceramic and thus need to be cured incrementally. That just isn't gonna happen.

I think I may have found a replacement! Check out Krylon #1618 high heat black. True blu-black, matte finish (low-sheen), nearly exactly the finish of Duravent and Harman, adjustable tip so you can aim the spray vertically or horizontally, dries in 15 minutes and re-coats perfectly. So far, it hasn't lifted any existing stove finish too. It won't touch up well over anything else but itself but for $5.18 a can....who cares. Could be the best thing that has happened to me in 2015. Great find. They can I have doesn't have the "Max" printed on it and shows a Webber grill instead of a fire pit. Couldn't find the picture of that can in the internet.

Sounds like your stove bright paint has been sitting on your distributors shelf too long. I have never had that issue. :) When I buy tractor paint from sears it takes 2 weeks to get because they have the paint company mix a new can so it is fresh. FYI

I have bought it at so many different places and it always does the same. It's not a sitting around problem, it's a formula tips issue. Mans gotta have fresh paint for his tractor. I hear the giant paint companies stop production all the time for those 1 and 2 can obscure color orders.

What would be a good paint to touch up a few spots on an Englander? Id love to not have to paint the whole thing.

My old Whit needs some paint on top, a greyish sparkle color, saw a can for $35...yea right, anyone know of paint for my old whit?

I think i gave a pretty fair accessment of your products. I mean think about it, why am I going to box store in search of something that works....because yours doesn't. I have tossed nearly 50 cans of this stuff away last year with lots and lots of paint still in the can because it was junk. My distributor refunded me some of the cans but the replacements were even worse.

But I should chase you for special tips to solve my problem?

Please. That what's wrong with the industry. Everyone wants it exclusive and specialized yet very few deserve to be there, stay there or actually ever belonged there.

I heard that for years, "the best place to go for all of your maintenance is your specialized hearth dealer, yada yada yada." Yet my service and aptitude usually top those of these so called specialized dealers and their techs.

Now that your marketing PR piece is done, how about grinding out a few hours of actually talking to your customers on the phone?

It's good you identify that your cans and tips don't perform well. It's good that the tips required to use the product or troubleshoot the can are not included with the product.

I'm not stupid or ignorant. I know how to shake a can of paint. 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 20 minutes it doesn't matter. Satin #1990 just sucks.

Sad but typical customer service these days. The response made them feel good about themselves, as if the "addressed" the issue.

Before condemning a lack of instant response. it might be good to remember that business hours are not the same as one's home internet hours and that Stove Brite is in a different time zone.

You can enhance the performance of Stove Bright aerosol paint by holding the can under hot tap water for 1 or 2 minutes. This heats the metal can which then transfers the heat to gas inside the can. This causes the gas to expand, creating slightly higher pressure in the can. This can help drive the well shook liquid product from the container.

The can has 3 places where a clog can occur. The tip, the valve, and the draw tube. The tip can be replaced, but clearing out the valve or draw tube can only be accomplished by allowing the debris to pass through a larger opening than the normal tip - which is the reason for the Clear-out Tip.

The reason that Stove Bright High Temp Paint can clog or partially clog the valve or draw tube has to do with the chemistry of paint for high temperature resistance. Most often the shaking of a room temperature can for 2 minutes will reduce the chance for these particles to remain when you spray, and thereby reducing the chance for a particle to clog the draw tube or valve.

It's all good. Sometimes I come off as kinda of a punk. Like I said in the OP, Stove Bright has its place in the industry. I like it when it works and will continue to use it. I got a call from Eugene, OR today in my voice mail, probably Forrest. I'll call them back when I have some time and find out what's up.

I realize there is a time lag coast to coast. Curious if I hadn't been indignant of the matter if I would have got a call from them at all.

I will say for the record I have never had any problems with any other colors from them ever. Just the 1990 and the 2330 which are essentially the same product.

Maybe my supplier gave me age old cans I don't know. I have about 10'of them in the shop that were DOA and never did anything and they are pressurized. So who knows.
 
It's hard to say, maybe it could have been a warehouse storage issue. Now you have a direct line to report the batch number for some followup.
