Our neighbors were having some pine and hemlock dropped at their house today. My wife drove by and asked them what they were going to do with the wood. They asked if she wanted it and said it was pine. Not knowing better, she asked them if it was good to burn. They said not really and so she declined. I got a text later this afternoon asking if pine was good to burn in the stoves. Then I found out what happened. Now she's bummed, but I told her not to worry and that I was impressed that she had taken the interest.

Did you check to see if they hauled the wood away? Doesn't hurt to go back.... She knows better for next time though:)
 
I didn't check tonight, but will drive by there on my way to work tomorrow. Hopefully they didn't haul it off, but we'll see. Next time she'll know to take it, that's for sure!
 
Please send the whole nest of scounging bugs to my house so I can dump them on my wife's side of the bed. She regards my habit with a casual disinterest.

The guys who cut that pine and hemlock down have obviously never seen pine and hemlock burn........And I suppose they think Russian Olive does. Blechhhhh!!!!

I cut, split and stacked some Russian Olive and every time it rained (fora couple months) the splits that got wet sprouted leaves and branches.
It all got mixed in with a mixed hardwood stack and I never did know exactly how well ( or not ) it burned.
 
Not a great loss, IMO. Pine is fine to burn if you have nothing else, but assuming NY ain't much different than PA, I'd not be wasting my time to process it. I have more oak and ash than I will ever find time to split, so why waste any on pine?
 
I enjoy pine for short hot fires, where I don't want a large coal bed. I'd rather burn pine in the shoulder season than my good hardwoods. Of course I wouldn't pay for it, but free....it produces heat.

BigCountryNY: I don't think your wife will make that mistake again. If nothing else, she'll call you first.

Ashful: To each their own! I happen to prefer pine over the major hard woods, and I have plenty of those hard woods split and stacked. Though pine may have different burning characteristics, once you learn them, it's a decent heating wood. Around this neck of the woods, it's also FREE! Kind of! Got the C/S/S with sweat which I don't mind.

I don't think she made a mistake. And I don't think she needs to call her husband first. EVER.

She was learning, and did as best as she could. Gals got the right mind set !!! :)

The whole wood burning thing is one hell of a learning curve.

I'm not broken up about missing out on the pine, but I like to have some in my stacks for quick, hot fires and burning down coal beds prior to reloads. NY is pretty much like PA in that you can't fall down without hitting a hardwood tree.

I'm ecstatic that my wife is becoming interested in helping out.

There's nothing wrong with communicating with your partner. If some one is learning and doesn't quite know yet making a call to make sure everyone is on the same page is a positive thing, not a negative one.

Yes, but since not everyone understands the Dept. of Redundancy Dept. sometimes you have to state the obvious.

EDIT: Point of clarification - she has two sisters and those two sisters are crazy.

Simply advise her that just about all wood is has it's place in burning, and free wood, is good wood, and free heat.
I love Pine. By the end of next Month and through a good bit of November, I'll be burning Pine & Poplar. Perfect time of year.
Will also burn in between full loads in the single digits. Each species has a place in the heating schedule here.

My wife finds about 80% of my scrounges and yells at me if I am not loading them up within 15 minutes
