Burning Hunk

When I bought my house about two years ago there were a few piles of wood around. All lying on the ground and only two covered. The covered piles were cut to size but not split. I split them and they've all been burned. The last pile was log lengths and sadly was too far gone for me to process. It's a pretty huge pile, 4-5 cords at least. I'd love to clear that area and use it for something else but I have no idea what to do with the wood or how to move it?

Has anyone else had a similar situation? Is my best bet to just run and old chain on the chainsaw and saw it up and haul it into the woods? Thanks for any advice.

Just burn it outside. Bonfire.

If you have the time or inclination, bury it in your garden. Rotting logs will make some tremendous topsoil and they suck up water like nobody's business. Let you get through dry spells without having to water.

There's a german word for it (surprise surprise)...hugelkultur.

I'd spread it on the forest floor to improve the soil. Rotting wood is also good habitat for salamanders, toads, etc. Punky wood will burn, but it makes a smoky fire.

Thanks for the suggestions. Some good ideas. Think I'll probably just go with burning it. I don't have much time and some of the other suggestions are too time intensive. Thanks again.

Wood duck is right about the smokey fire! But I'd prolly burn it. Unless, you think some could be turned. People who turn bowls and such love stuff that is spalted.... Think that's the word.
