Anyone use an ash/trash can to empty their ashes in?
For the past few burn seasons I've just carried the ash pan outside when full and dumped it off on the back side of my property... Threw some snow on it if available.
Just bought a 6 gallon metal can with "air lock" locking lid for $15. Will of course leave outside but will hopefully makes trudging across the yard in the snow/cold easier this year.
 
I use a small metal trash can for my ashes. I put my ashes in the trash, but only after they've sat in that can for at least 3 days.

I've been meaning to get one for a while now but thought, until last winter's constant snow, that it was easier to just walk out the slider and dump it in the back of the yard. When the snow finally melted in what seemed like June, I had a old pile of ash sitting in the yard.

I use a behrens 10 gallon galvanized steel bucket, it works great for me. Has an air tight lid and I keep it in the shed. I spread the ash in my back yard, it helps big time with soil acidity. I had a ton of pine trees in my back yard.
 
I use a small galvanized one for in between cleanings, when I just need to scoop some out. then I carry the bucket outside with the lid on and put it on the paver walkway. If there is snow, I sit it on top of the snow.
If its a full cleaning I just shut down, wait for it to cool off and shop vac the stove, then immediate empty it into water.
 
Mine may be galvanized, but it is painted black. Got it off of Amazon though :)
 
I have and older chef sauce pot, probably 3 gallons worth, I scoop into that and out the door it goes.....
A bad story only a couple years ago, a grandpa put hot ashes in a back room and ended up killing 3 people due to a house fire, it was near New Year's Eve....
 
I just chuck 'em out the window a few feet from the stove. It lands on a patch of gravel where there's no chance of catching anything on fire.
 
Galvanized ash can with lid that I got from HD.
 
I dump mine on top of the compost pile at the rear of the property.
Not sure what happens to them as I've never used any of the compost.

I don't grow a garden as I keep my fresh produce stored at the local grocery store
where they are ready to be harvested anytime I feel like some fruit or veggies (Not often!!!)

We this one to store used cat litter, works great. You can store at least 7-8 last litter changes in one can. I swear you can sleep next to a full one and not smell it.
 
I also use a similar can. My wood boiler is bottom grate design so I have few if any coals. The resulting ash is just ash or on occasion I get very loosely packed clinkers. Thus I really don't worry about colas lighting up again but it is impressive to see how long the hot ash stays hot in the bucket. Unfortunately with my boiler, one good cleaning and the bucket is full.

I don't... I use a coal hod w/ lid.... got it at lowe's or TSC 5 years or so ago.... finally starting to rust out. I need to get another one.
 
when the ash can is full, and its been a few days and you know theres nothing burning in there, stick the suction end of the leaf blower in the bucket. The cloud will be epic.
Sometimes I get real bored during the winter...

I vacuum out my entire stove including the ash pan with an ash vac.
 
30.00 HD special...wet/dry/2 Gallon.
clamp and sock xtra....;)
sock get's all the dust.
just didn't see the need to lug around a 5 gallon Vac when the ash from pellets isn't much at all or heavy..
