Thinking about replacing my insert, which has performed well but is just too small to heat my place without flogging it. Even with flogging, I can't keep anything close to an overnight burn, and the temps inside drop to wife-bitching levels quickly. Since it's primarily used for the weekends, it takes a LONG time to heat up. Am planning on blowing in some insulation in the attic, but not sure how much of a difference it will make.

Anyway, what are my options for a free-standing stove? I'm too many projects behind to make this a major project--probably ideally I'd take out the hearth and run new class a. But I think I should be able to use a rear-exit stove into my existing 6" liner. Looks are not important at all (to me, at least!). I think the biggest limiting factor would be my firebox height of 29". Here are details about the install:

The house is 1500 sq ft, but has block construction with minimal add'l wall insulation, and a sunroom with big glass sliders and a very cold slab floor. Also gets a lot of wind off the water. Temps are typically upper teens nights/upper 20's days at the coldest time of the year.

Large: Woodstock Ideal Steel or Progress Hybrid (with short leg kits), Hearthstone Manchester, High Valley 1600

Medium: Woodstock Fireview, Quadrafire Explorer 2, Hearthstone Castleton and Heritage, maybe Jotul F500 with short leg kit (inquire with dealer), the F45 is just barely too high (29.5")

probably ideally I'd take out the hearth and run new class a.

If you want to go for a rear-vent hearthmounted stove I would just connect it to the liner you have. Otherwise, rip out the whole fireplace including pipe and install a top-venting stove with new class A. That will give you more space, be a cleaner install, and you can choose one of many top-vented stoves.

Not looking to go nuts, don't know what they cost. No matter what, I'll never recoup the cost. Like I said, I'm looking at it as a heater and not a decoration. I'm thinking steel with a big window.

Yeah, seem kinda spendy. Might keep my eyes open on CL. I'd probably have a hard time spending $300 year on heating that place even with nothing. And I'm down another $50 on an X27 I bought today, and $250 on a new saw last week...
