Our current stove has an 8" flue and we have the 8" SS liner up the entire length of our masonry chimney. Pretty much all of the new stoves we are looking at require 6". Is it permissible to use 6" out of the stove and TO the vertical liner and then get an adapter to neck it down or will we need an entire new 6" liner in the chimney as well? Our stove sits in front of an existing fireplace so from the stove goes horizontally to the liner then up.

If the chimney liner is tall enough and draft strong enough it may work out ok to keep the 8" liner. This is not ideal, but it does work ok for some. The horiz. run doesn't help so keep it short and pitched uphill toward the liner by at least 1/4" per foot. More is better. Is the 8" liner insulated? How tall is it?
To be honest Im not really sure. When we bought this stove, the place we got it delivered and installed everything. To me it looks like just plain old metal liner. Doesn't seem very thick. You pretty much hit on my concerns about draft with the horizontal section as due to having to put in a pad for the stove, it makes it close to have room to get it to the fireplace opening and up as it is now.
Two story chimney in the center of the house. The liner was installed with the stove so would be 8-9 years.
There is a chance it may work out ok. If the current liner passes inspection by the sweep I would be inclined to try it out. This does mean though if the results are unsatisfactory that a new 6" liner may be necessary as replacement.
