I also tried the top down method lastnight for the first time.. I too was amazed on how well it worked. :coolsmirk:

I think Heat Miser has it about right. Full cycle burns works excellently well in cat stoves. One thing I would add, time reload with enough hot coals to get a rapid heat recovery and quick return to cat operation.
 
Heat Miser explained it well, although I would like to add that with a soapstone stove I wait until the load burns down to coals then rake some off to the sides and let the heat from the stove radiate until the temperature gets down to 300-350 degrees, then rake the coals to the front of the stove and reload.
