putting a v.c. montpilier insert in my exterior split rock chimney.. 6 inch with insulation will not fit down my 6 inch ceramic flue... will it make that much difference to use a 5.5 inch liner instead??? thankyou..

I've got my insert in the basement, I believe my line is 21 feet, and I'm running a 5.5" smooth wall liner, because of the same conditions. A 6" wouldn't fit, even without insulation. So I built a block off plate, and a couple cheap bags of vermiculite later I have an insulated liner. This will be the fourth winter with it installed. Very little comes out when I clean it, and sometimes I even have issues with too much draft, I've had to use some magnets to block some of the intake holes at times.

didnt think of insulating that way...... just have to figure out how to make something to cover the damper hole that i cut out.....good idea .. thanks....

15 feet is the length i need.. i wont b able to insulate a 6 inch and still get it down the chimney...
At that height i would say you need 6" but the best way to know for sure is call the stove manufacturer and ask them. We would break out the old liners in a case like yours

thanks everyone for the info... went with the 5.5 inch liner and installation was a breeze.. about two and a half hours from start to finish.. at 15 feet in length the draft was awesome..the oily film on the liner smelled a little as it burned off but after an hour all was well and it worked perfectly.....
