Last year I really wanted to buy a 4 way splitter wedge. After seeing how much they were, I decided to have my dad weld one up for me out of some scrap steel we had laying around. I'm guessing that the steel wasn't hard enough because I've ripped the horizontal wings off, and then ripped off one of the side plates. I have a speeco 22 tob splitter that's just like a tsc county line. Anyone buy a slip on wedge and have success with it not breaking? I was looking at this Swisher wedge that has pretty good reviews.

If you build your own use at least T1 steel. AR 500 would be better but pricey.

Just made one for a customer, standard A36 steel, preheated before welding with 7018 stick. 3/8" plate - cut partly to bend to nose- front knife edge built up welds , top and back enclosed with 1/8" plate. If there is a failure likely will be the wings. we will see if or how long before destruction. Do not have camera here but did snap a couple pics. pretty much a full enclosure type- short side wings as the longer they get the more force is generated by the leverage. Made to fit a northern tool wedge ( 12"h x 1"t x 6"l) as they no longer offer one. He picked it up last night.

I had one. It was great for straight grain stuff. Really cut down on the time for splitting. It was also great to make a bundle of kindling real fast. However, the steel was weak. It started warping and then eventually it just popped off and wouldn't fit back on. I saved it because I had designs on get someone to fortify this one for me.....can't remember where I put the damn thing now. In summation, it is a great tool for the brief time that it worked. I'd you have a welder or friend to modify it, it could be perfect. It kind of reminds me of a harbor freight tool, needs a little bit of further engineering to make it fully functional

Thanks for the insight. I already have one that I twisted and ripped apart. I don't need another one of those.

I think that was maybe part of my original design problem. I bet my side wings were 4 inches long. and the steel I used on the sides that I "wrapped" around the main splitter wedge was only 1/4" steel. And just regular old steel at that - nothing fancy.

Well A36 is pretty much just plain old steel just a hair bit better than 1020 ( I think that's the right #)
