just broke in my new jotul f55 per the manuals instructions. I noticed on the cook top part of it changed color from the black enamel to a dark grayish color and 2 spots on the front of the stove did the same. I got it to the temps it said in the book. Is this normal?

here's a pic

Does not look normal. Maybe the paint was not applied properly. I would contact the dealer.

Paint responds differently than enamel.

That's not enamel. Well doesn't look like it to me. As far as the paint curing, that looks normal to me. What temps did you get it up to? Doesn't look like you got close to 400. I would say 300 max. The hotter it gets, you can actually watch the paint cure as it burns. Pretty cool but the paint really stinks. It set my smoke detectors off twice. One time in the middle of the night. So disconnect them during the break in process because they will go off on the 400 degree burn. I had the windows open with 10 degree temps outside. This time of the year it's much better for break in. Make sure you allow the stove to cool down to room temp before doing the next bout of break in burns.
Good luck with the stove. It's been great for me. This season will be my first full season with it.

400 @ the center or on the corner? Mine cured much larger area on a 400 degree burn. Your putting the thermometer here right? The center is over 100 degrees hotter

This was the center temp when the corners were 700

This is normal. Eventually after a full season and some good hot burns it will even out. No worries. Also the steel plates inside the box on the left and right will bow a bit. Also fine.

one of my side plates cracked at the weld. Supposedly Jotul has a fix for this and my stove shop is coming out to fix it in a few weeks. I am not happy about this happening already!
