Well valuable lesson learned. My work is taking down 15 ash that succumbed to the boarer. Maintenance guy had tree guy set all rounds in pile for me. Problem is I only have a small utility trailer and can only take a little bit at a time. Because of this now 3 other recreational burner types at my work have been weasel ing in on my scrounge. Ah well I guess I should stop being so selfish and share. Definitely need a better trailer though. I think I have an addiction to my wood pile

Me too. I have a new obsession with free wood (many ash borer kills in my area also).

I keep telling myself to "go tortoise", ya know... slow and steady. Not every dead ash has to be mine...

I have a pile o rounds to split still and the time to do none of it.

Yet lined up a golf course scrounge for tomorrow... It's a sickness?

Dig the moniker btw... I repair old hifi too...

I see firewood everywhere. A friend posted a picture of a fall tree in full bloom. I know she was impressed with the colors. I commented... Look at all that firewood!
But, I need to stop. If it snows before I get what I've got taken care of, I'm screwed!

Here you go. Keep your eyes open for one of these:

That's an M101A2 military trailer. Rated to carry 2250 pounds, but I've had 2 tons on mine and it didn't flinch. Surge brakes, pintle hitch. Counting registration, I've got a whopping $500 in it. Since this picture was taken I've removed the rear barn doors. I found them more trouble than they were worth.

Nice - I would snap that up in a heartbeat....

Pick up (1 ton pref) with an 8' box.

Like we say around here, beware of a man with bark flying out of his box.

Is that something one finds at a surplus dealer?

A friend of mine has two of those. Both fixed up real nice. Heavy duty trailers. He has one that he's pulled behind a jeep all across the country and back. I'd certainly like to find one myself.

Very nice would love one of those. Right now Im using my old tent trailer sans roof and innards. Just trying to baby through this scrounge than taking to my Father inlaws fabrication shop over winter for a rebuild. Frame and chassis still good, just box that sucks

I got mine from an online government auction run by a company called govliquidation.com. I understand that they lost the contract, and things are now being auctioned by Govplanet.com

There's a site called steelsoldiers.com that has a lot of info on these beasts.

You already have a trailer hitch so look into larger trailers. Trailers are a lot cheaper than trucks.

These type of trailers are readily available @ GovernmentLiquidation.com look in the state of Indiana. Close to you also, Indianapolis. Short drive I imagine.

I have one of these as well. Can't beat it. I got mine from a guy in Ohio on steel soldiers. It's not as convenient as owning a truck, but it could definitely carry up to my max towing limit with my Jeep.

What's the catch? What is an "end use certificate"? Is this something you have to have a like a dealer or auction license to buy? If not, I can't believe someone doesn't buy em all up, and turn around and sell em for 1500 or more a pop. I mean, it's military grade literally, lol. I think the trailers lift up as well like a dump bed.

The catch is that it's an auction. You can get burned if you don't do your homework. Some have. It's also sight unseen, unless you happen to live near one of the auction sites. I got my trailer and 2 pickups that way, and have not been burned. The first pickup was a 94 Chevy 1500 with a service body, but the driveshaft had been dented. Not realizing how bad that was, I drove it for a few weeks, but the out of balance driveshaft trashed the transmission. But still, for $1150, it ain't bad! If I had known better, I could have gotten a new driveshaft and saved myself the cost of a trans rebuild. My other pickup is a CUCV (militarized 84 Chevy one ton), and it was a bit rougher than I had thought, but not badly so. Wouldn't shift out of 1st, so I had to tow it home. Turned out to be rotted vacuum lines. No biggie. Needed batteries, though. But then, I bid on an M1008 and was very glad to get it, then got it home and found I really had bought an M1028, which has beefier springs and is rated higher. Ohhhhh, dear! ;lol

I also got a good 8 kW civilian generator for $200. My insurance guy bought a similar civilian genset from them that was listed as "inoperable". He got it for $150, if I recall correctly. Got it home and found it was new in the box. :)

The EUC is basically a certificate that says you have passed a background check and are now authorized to take possession of a valuable piece of military hardware, because Uncle Sam has decided that he trusts you not to sell that dangerous military hardware to enemies of the U.S.A.

Once you have signed up on the website, bid on an item and won, you'll download a form and fill it out, then wait for it to clear. They will email you when it's good, and you can go pick up your item or have it shipped. It's no biggie.

The 1102 series trailers are also a great deal. They are newer than the 101 series. If you get a 101, stick with the A2 or A3 variants. The A1 had funky miliary tires and rims. It's very hard to find replacements. The A2 and A3 have standard 16" rims. They run the same wheels as my trucks and my van. Just standard 285/R16 tires.

Heh. My M101A2 came with brand new Michelin truck tires. Not too shabby! Those tires normally cost about what I paid for the whole enchilada!

You'll need to replace the bulbs, usually, as they run 24v. The bases the same as standard 12v automotive bulbs. You'll also want to change the connector, as it's a funky military-only job. Easy to replace it with an RV 7 pin plug, or a flat 5 pin plug.

Yep. I've towed my maxed out with my Cherokee, many times.

Hmm. I'd have to find a hitch to match that one since I've got a ball on my truck. Not sure if they have those that will just slide into my hidden hitch. I'd also have to tow it about 200 miles to save on shipping without trailer lights until I could figure out how to swap those with the normal 5 or 7 pin. Seems kinda silly I'd have to pass a background check to buy a trailer. I could see if it came with rocket launcher.

I also see where you'd have to spend some cash to get a humvee on the road because of emissions standards.

People do buy them up, turn around and sell them for $800-$1500 depending on condition etc.

As far as the end use certificate, I believe that is a "title" release from military use.

I did not want to really deal with that I can't remember which I used, it was either http://www.mainetrailerregistrations.com/ or http://staabagency.com/ and registered mine in Maine. $99 for 5 years

Well thanks, there went half my day looking at old government surplus Items I want! :p

What about licensing? I mean, how do you get it home if I drive up there before the pick up time runs out, and they start charging for storage? Do I just run it home on a two hour drive with no lights, license, and figure that all out later? lol. What is the "fees" at the end? Like what should I expect to pay total on top of winning bid? They're currently having an auction right now. I wonder how it would work if I bid on a 5k machine, and then didn't pass the background check or whatever? Seems you should fill all that out first, make sure everythings ok, and then bid.

I notice the newer trailers are starting at 300, but going for over a grand with like 40 plus bids, so it kind of takes away the incentive of getting one on the cheap. I might have to stick to the old 1960's models that get like one or two bids and hover around $400. The one I wanted here close to me just went for almost 2K, so 6 times the starting price. Nah. Kinda tough to bid against 70K people. I might just stick to the local in person auctions with less than 300 people.

May seem silly for a utility trailer, but they do sell some pretty ridiculous stuff which they probably don't want in the hands of bad guys.

Couple that with one of the M1A1 trailers and......

I picked up an M101A2 for $500 in the Spring. I looked for one for a year on and off, because here in PA they are dicks about titling them. Finally found one with a PA title and snapped it up. Haven't used it for much yet other than hauling mulch but I'll be using it for scrounges when I get them. Also they sell adapter harnesses on eBay from the military plug to a 7 pin. I had planned on getting one but the guy I bought it from had the harness all bitched up so I bought a set of LEDs with a 4 pin harness and wired them up. You can also buy a pintle hitch at TSC or the like. I had one I "acquired" from work
