I need to build a pad with an r rating of 2. I was looking at the sweeps library for noncumbustible materials and it says gypsum board has a r rating of .45. I was thinking of using 4 pieces of gypsum board and then dura rock as the top sheet and tiling over that. My question is can I use the gypsum board for that application. No place around me sells micore, and I would need to use like ten sheets of dura rock to get an r rating of two. Thx
 
I'm not sure I even need to say this but I am a total newbie to wood stoves, and feeling a little overwhelmed
 
Did you decide on the 13NC. That has a very stiff hearth pad requirement.

1/2' NG Durock has a thermal rating of 0.39. Hence a thermal requirement of 2 would require 6 sheets, not 10 (actually 5.1 per the math). Does the 13-NC have that high a thermal requirement? My 30-NC requirement is 1.5.

yeah ftg the 13nc requires an r 2 rated pad. thanks, math was never my strong suit.
 
The other stoves mentioned will have very simple hearth requirements of ember protection only. That can be as simple as a sheet of cement board and tile, a sheet of metal, or even glass.
 
I kept mine simple and used materials I had available/cheap. Designed it to be functional/to size and then removed the carpet/pad. Under is plywood/PS foam/concrete pad. Then used simple bricks on their side (~4" tall) mortared to the floor. Once cured, tiled it out.
Unless the stove bottom breaks off and a load of coals get on the pad, I can't see there ever being enough heat to start a fire through the pad. If anything, the wall will light first.
