Ah . . . the smell of Fall.

The smell of kids at school smelling like a charred campfire log from being in a home where the stove is not drafting correctly and smoke has apparently filled the home . . .

Walking to my car in the parking lot and smelling woodsmoke that smells like a 5-gallon pail of creosote from folks who apparently are burning unseasoned wood or not burning hot enough.

The smell of dry leaves burning from a home owner who has dumped their hot ashes from the woodstove to a pile outside.

I suppose the "smells of fall" could be worse though . . . seeing as the local fire department had the "smell of a wooden deck" on fire after the home owner repeatedly burned trash . . . in a metal washing machine tub . . . on his wooden deck. Apparently he had never heard about conductive heating . . . guys said when they arrived the tub o' trash was on the ground and the deck had a neat 6 foot circle burned into it . . . and flames were starting to go into the side of the house.

I work for a city PD and have seen some of the stuff you guys get to deal with. The best was the rehab. house where the owner ripped out sheetrock, insulation, and vinyl siding and made a big burn pile in the backyard. I'm sure there was some pressure treated wood cut offs in there too. I swear you could smell that for miles...

Gagged on smoke when out for a walk yesterday. Someone was burning a large pile of wet yard waste. The smoke must have covered a 1/2 mile area.

It's illegal to burn yard trash in our region. Has been for a few years now. The only way you can have any kind of outdoor fire is if you have a bag of weenies ready for toasting. Even then, if there's a no-fire alert, it's zilch, nada - or else. I was at the dump today after trying to get the garage clear enough for the winter to get the Kubota inside. Separate bins for yard waste, brush, light plastic, dark plastic, garbage, metal, cardboard, computers & electronics. All destined for China to be recycled into something to go on the Wallymart shelves.

If I was locked in a room with no windows for months I would still know what season it was by the scent of my cat's fur when he comes in... Currently it's a hint of sweet woodsmoke or peat smoke. In a couple of months there'll be top notes added to that heady mix, of snow or frost.

I just HAVE to go there someday, even though I hate bagpipes and Scotch whiskey. Lisbon, then Italy one week today instead. I'll drown my sorrows in fresh pasta and wine instead. Maybe Scotland next year.

Me . . . I like them . . . most of the time they make me feel like crying . . . or fighting . . . or both.

I can handle fingernails on a chalkboard better than bagpipes. Actually, sorta similar music to me. I have decreed that there will be no bagpipes at my funeral. Lots of whiskey, no bagpipes.

My wife & I honeymooned in England & Scotland just a few (OK, 19 short) years ago, and plan to return next year. If you might still be open to trying other types of Scotch whisky, then you might try some of the lowland lightly peated versions. I like Laphroig & Talisker, which are both highly smoky & peaty.

As to bagpipes, have you tried any of the non-standard bagpipe artists? Martyn Bennett (died at age 33 in 2005 from lymphoma) was an amazing artist. Some of his music is a neat mix of almost hip-hop and Celtic fusion. Not your average piper. For a consummate piping artist, yet more traditional in some of his works, you might try Gordon Duncan (also died 2005, suicide following long term depression). Both are pretty neat.

I don't think it was the pipes that killed them. I think they just suffered a severe lack of WRX driving in their lives.
