I would like to use a duraflame log in my fireplace to help start wood logs but there is a warning on the duraflame package to not use them for this purpose. Why would that be?

I've though of trying it, but never found a duraflame to play with. I don't know if it'll crumble or not when cut. I will tell you that the SuperCedar's people talk about here is an awsome product. I just ordered another case of 100 unwrapped. Use the "discount code of 'hearth' or 'hearth15' for a 10% discount.

Duraflame is a wax/sawdust product. I imagine that the trapped heat/ weight of the wood would cause the dura flame to burn/ crumble uncontrollably. Better that you slice off a bit to use as a fire starter.

My Daughter bought me some a couple years ago by mistake. I just cut off a little to start my fires. You just need a little about half the size of a golf ball. I use an old fillet knife to cut it.

Take a look at your stove manual. It probably says specifically to not burn this type of product. If it is all that is available cut the log down into 1" thick pucks and break them in half for safer starters. A much better product are SuperCedars which can be ordered on line with a Hearth.com discount or from Amazon, Nothern Tool, etc..
