It's giving time and our mailbox is filled with donation requests. We get one or two by phone most days too. the worst charities spend very little of the money they collect on the actual cause. The best spend over 75%. Here are a some guides to sort out the good from the bad.

The percent spent directly may NOT be the best indicator of which charity is best. It's been pointed out that unless you believe that only a certain number of dollars will ever be collected, that spending on events and advertising may actually increase the total. So- a charity that spends a $10k to make an additional $50k looks poor in this analysis, but has in fact made more money and spends more TOTAL towards doing something good.

In effect- percent of the pie analysis is only valid for the case where you cannot find a way to make the pie bigger.

That is not to say that no charities are wasteful, of course, but that one statistic doesn't tell the story
