. Don't have a lot of red oaks on the property. I think my grandpa cut a bunch of them through the years feeding the Ashley heater. Pics coming after the work is done

no leaves on this one but there's one right beside it with the turkey foot leaves
I forgot to mention the aroma while splitting. Pure heaven!
+1 on the aroma. It ranks up there with frying bacon as one of my favorite smells.
I also like that the wood doesn't seem to rot as fast as others. I have some year-old hickory rounds that are almost too punky to mess with, yet I uncovered some forgotten red oak that had been buried under leaves for at least two years and they were still fantastic inside (with only a little surface rot).
One better smell...frying bacon in a fire of oak and maple, with a fresh pot of joe percolating...+1 on the aroma. It ranks up there with frying bacon as one of my favorite smells.
First thing that occurred to me, with that bark texture, was Black Oak. Orange inner bark is another feature of Black. Leaves would help but it looks like anything could be lying around in that area.
