Hi all. My next door Neighbour has been lighting up his new osburn matrix free standing stove with soapstone sides. Was over there last night having a drink and checking it out. For the most part he's happy with it and it puts out a ton of heat.
Only a couple issues... Told him I'd ask here for him.
1. When stove heats up and blowers on regardless of speed. Fan blower shroud on back rattles like crazy. It u touch or push on it it goes away. Shroud is riveted on from factory and seems pretty thin... Anybody have any ideas for solutions to this

2. When stove is riding on a burn with air control set to min his fire is still a bit too lively. His chimney is 8' double wall with 2 45degree inside and about 8ft class a. Straight shot up. No flue damper. Told him I'd ask about this as well

Thanks
Jeff

Shocked this hasn't gotten any hits yet lol !!!

bump ... any suggestions? Should he maybe look at installing a flue damper. Not sure how it would affect these epa stoves

Check the door seal first - dollar bill test, is it wood flames or secondary flames your seeing? Also maybe add a self tapping screw to the shroud to keep it from rattling

door seal is good checked with 5$ bill we dont have ones LOL. unit is brand new, air control does control just doesn't seem to go low enough. The wood flames are what he cant seem to get as low as he'd expect not sure how low these stoves go though. Secondaries seem good. I dont think he wants to go putting screws into his brand new stove I was thinking maybe seeing if we can jam a couple pieces of steel banding inbetween shroud and stove to tighten it up a bit

That's the stove we'll hopefully be buying this spring. Any other thoughts on it from you or him?

With the soapstone option, does it throw enough radiant heat to satisfy the wife who currently curls up a foot or two away from a radiant kerosene heater each evening?

Yea the soapstone is kinda a heat sink but lets out more when burn is lower so I would say it evens out the radiant heat output over time. Other than the two issues I mentioned he is very happy with it, plus I think its a super cool looking unit. The installer cracked one of the soapstones during install so he's still waiting for a replacment one. Surely they will be timely with it as he held back some cash until its fixed.

If it were mine though that rattle would drive me nuts, kinda a little unimpressed that they couldnt have put a gasket or something between the fan shroud and the stove, seems like a bit of a poor/sloppy design on that. I told him to call SBI and complain, from what I've read here they've been pretty good about dealing with peoples issues. Luckily I haven't had any with my selkirk fireplace which is also made by SBI.

HehHeh . . . you're saying checking the seal with a Loonie will not work so well? ;) :)

Plastic eh? You guys aren't running out of trees to print paper money are you? ;)

I had a Matrix insert that had the same annoying rattle from the fan. I wedged a little Roxul insulation under the bottom of the stove and it went away, so maybe you could try that?

Did your neighbor ever find a solution to the "lively flame" issue? I have this same stove and it seems as if it's impossible to damper down completely.

Does he have a stovepipe thermometer about 2' above the collar? How lively the flame is shouldn't determine whether the stove needs dampered down. The temperature of the smoke going up the chimney is how it should be determined. Adjust the air so that he's got a temp reading in the burn zone, 350-500 degrees or so-whatever the thermostat is marked, and when it settles in at that point it's good. My stove has a very "lively" flame when fully loaded and set for the night at 400 with the damper 90% closed but it holds there for hours until it starts to fade. 8 -10 hours later I have a full bed of coals to start again.
