Burning Hunk

Yup. I was planning on buying 3 tons this year after my first year burning last year, and I still haven't bought any substantial amount. I picked up 15 bags of different types from Blows, HD and TSC but I haven't even tried. I have the stove on now on the lowest setting and to tell you the truth it is nice but oil is cheap and supposedly it's going to stay that way for many years to come. so I'm not making my money back anytime soon. But I am glad gas and oil are so cheap.

If the fighting in the Middle East gets serious, the two major oil loading terminals belonging to Saudi Arabia and Iran will be hit and hit hard...Oil prices will triple overnight.....

The fighting in the Middle East could happen but oil prices going up looks very unlikely. We, America, the U.S of F'ing A have increased oil production instead of relying on foreign terrorists that sell oil to us. That and the fact that we the USA have enough oil to last our children's children, is enough reason for me not to buy pellets from HD.

Sorry to say. But your information is a little wrong. The oil rigs and oil fields in this country have been moth balled since the drop in prices. There are over 200,000 workers in this country and over 600,000 workers that have been laid off due to the price drop.

Ok ok, so I'm wrong and I'm right, but the fact is I haven't purchased any tonnage yet. That's what's scary. Even the moderate temps are scary. I was just at HD yesterday and saw prices were still at $259 for Green Garbage. That's when I wrote this post. There's even pellets at my local supermarket now!!! It's unbelievable!

I waited to purchase because prices were ridiculous earlier this fall. A local farm store wanted 300/ton for average pellets (price was typical everywhere). I tried a few weeks later and the price had dropped to 225/ton (which includes a 10% reduction for a 'bulk purchase'). I called a few days ago and the price dropped to 206/ton including tax. Patience paid off.

They only dropped about $20-$25 a ton here for big box stores, which are now $259 a ton.. One stove dealer still wants up in the $300+ range for his and for Oknagan Douglas Fir he wants $400 a ton. I have no idea how he is making out but a lot of his customers are pre season so called sale customers and they probably bought before the oil dropping in price.. They do get a better break but sheesh. Meanwhile the big box stores didn't move much of anything for pellets all fall but are now, I think mostly because we got some actual cold weather. $259 a ton is not a particular bargain unless someones house is on propane or electric for heat.

The thing I like about Pellets is the heat is bought & paid for, No surprise in the mail after the tank was filled or the gas bill. I have just under 2 tons on hand and will need another to get through the year. I'll have to grab one before the cold really sets in and the "shortage" occurs.

If this year follows the last couple then get your final stash before Feb.

Every year is different and although there are no guarantees, this winter in the northeast is supposed to be milder and less snowy due to El Niño. The last time that happened was the 2008-9 winter and it happened then with a strong El Niño. Second, Saudi Arabia has broken away from OPEC and are pumping their fields hard to capture market share. Third, U.S. oil production is higher and right now oil producers are running out of places to store it. Fourth, Iranian oil is about to be taken off the embargo list and they are planning on selling it as quickly as possible to raise hard currency and this will put further downward pressure on prices. FWIW, the U.S. imports its oil from Venezuela, not the Middle East. Now, we could get hit by an asteroid and I'm sure that would have oil prices rise, but let's enjoy the various market influences that have all come together this year to stick it to the pellet suppliers who thought they could cash in on the pellet craze this heating season.

Yeah they got ahead of themselves and need to realign with the common man and other market conditions around them. Purely my own opinion. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to agree that really pellets started out as an alternative fuel with lower cost than higher cost oil and propane too. Looking purely at this from from a consumer view point, It would be mighty nice if it stayed that way considering that while pellets are more cozy a flame to look at they certainly don't come shipped with the convenience of the other products and don't justify a same as or even higher in some cases, price.. While my philosophy isn't so much to " stick it" to someone, I certainly will burn pellets more conservatively for the time being. The 4 tons we burned last year may only be 1-2 tons this year with oil taking up the slack. Not to stick it anywhere but because that will be most cost effective for me to do and still have some nice glow on the hearth. All along with the hope that the pellet industry get's over themselves. Ya know way up in Northern New England , mostly Maine, where wood heat is prevalent, this was predicted by the locals there.

Local farm store chain is having a Saturday only sale for pellets $3.79 a bag. May pickup a ton. Have not bought any heating fuels this season and probably really not need to with how mild the beginning of winter being the opposite of last year. BUT that can change and winter has just begun. Better to have a ton in the van than needing to run and get fuel with snow up to the bum.

You're the second guy in two days to talk about a farm stand having lowered prices. I sure hope this trends out east here pretty soon !! LOL

I'm burning pellets only because there's a little grocery store down the street that always has 5-6 tons of Lignetics in their lot and are selling them for $250/ton and they are not losing money on them. If they were $300+ a ton I'd probably be burning oil only.

At $5.18 ( $259 a ton for ThemaGlo) a bag we are burning a few bags through this Holiday. The stove was off all afternoon yesterday and most of the night, it then came on early this morning. It's running now but going off soon, supposed to be near 60 out today. Due to get cold again Sunday into Monday, Tues etc., I'll use the stove for supplementary heat, though it often takes over from the oil all together unless it stays cold out.

I'd love to see Bioburners price that he paid !

You mean as far as supply or pricing wise?
Mucho, in the past couple of years places like HD start turning their stores over to spring products and they just sell off the pellet supplies. Tractor Supply might carry new stock for another month but it comes in much more limited amounts of pallets. Instead of a truckload for a store, a truckload goes to several stores. So towards spring, at least here in SE New England, supplies of pellets dry up starting in Feb and worsening as spring happens. That's why I said get what you need by Feb. Now it may not be that way where you are but we hear cries throughout the forum every year lately.

10-4. I haven't purchased my pellets for the winter but I'm still keeping an eye on the prices at the places that have them. I need these prices to be lower. Maybe 30 to $40 lower.

I'm not watching so much if pellets drop much more since people have started buying them now locally. It's more what oil does at the moment. I knew I would use the stove during the Holidays anyway because we but especially the wife, likes the glow in the living room and guests like the extra warmth too.. I planned to buy one to two tons before Jan as well because I like running dual fuel in the cold weather when pricing is close like this. So in the next few weeks if prices don't move on pellets so be it, if oil starts rising the pellet purchase will be sooner than later. Either way no doubt I will have at least one ton of pellets on site vs buying bags by Christmas.

Im glad propain was down, so I could pre buy much more. Most pellet prices have dropped recently, just not the higher end pellets. Their on avg $10 more per ton than last year. A few new options to my area are highly praised brands but they are also the most expensive ones around as well. One bag heats my house to 72 for 24 hrs, if I run my %98 eff propain boiler at 72, Ill drain my tanks in a few weeks.
