05 Harman Accentra question

Looking at some of the newer Harman stoves, I noticed they don't have the steel plates covering the heat exchangers in the back of the stove. I was wondering if anyone has ever ran the stove or is it possible to run the stove without the plates in place. Seems it would create more heat without the exchangers being blocked. What was the design change that makes it possible to run the stove with the heat exchangers being exposed?

Much less maintenance with the new design. I had the accentra insert the last year before the change and I had to disassemble and scrape the accordion heat exchanger fins twice per week or else I lost a tremendous amount of heat output. After scraping the heat would jump 10 degrees and would gradually decrease until I did it again. Buy the new one in my opinion. Happy turkey day!

I don't think you would get an efficient heat exchange with the plates removed, since the heated air would be drawn directly to the 2 channels at the bottom rather than up and over the tops of the plates and down across the fins.

Sounds correct. I wonder how its accomplished without the plates on the newer style.?
