I should be burning wood in my stove now, right?

Here it is late November and I have hardly had my stove going at all, between the very mild weather and we had a sick cat for the last 3 weeks so we were a bit preoccupied, but there hasn't been much call for firing up the old stove yet but I'm sure that we will pay for it in the near future!

But I must say when I did use it, the draft was better because of that new cap that was put on to keep those crazy birds out because it is a lot more open that the old one, so that is a plus!

I've been burning almost 24/7 for 2-3 weeks, albeit lightly and using shoulder wood. Our stove room stays cool to cold with a high ceiling and block construction, and that's our family room. I let it burn down more before a reload of maybe 2 splits at a time, and it does get a-hole hot in here sometimes. Last year this time was a different story. It's really nice to be ready- better than ever before, thanks to this forum

Yea, I wouldn't mind it if it dropped 15 degrees . I have been fired up several times but when the day temp goes above 55 I let it burn out that morning. The long term forecast looks like I'm not going to have many fires.

Draft or draught?

Well, located right north of Collegeville and south of Emmaus, I've already gone thru a full cord! Been burning most evenings since early October, minus two one-week spells of real warm weather. Odd how October started off so cold, but then warmed up at the end? This is the first time I've ever mowed my lawn right thru the month of November. "I will be mowing for the last time tomorrow," but now I've said that five times this year.

PA. Woodsman you must be jonesing right now! Weve had the last 4 nights go down to -4 ::F and have been burning non stop for a long time now. Its become so normal that its routine! Good luck on getting some cooler weather!

I don't think these guys are saying they don't need heat, just that they're not running their stoves. If their Manchester and Aurora could run as low and slow as my BK, they may have started burning eight weeks ago. I'm also heating more square footage than the average family, by some margin.

Yes sir, roughly 2000 SF upstairs old rancher, but uninsulated block walls. It easier to keep a warm house warm than warm up a cold house IMO. I'm sure I've burned 1/2 cord easily by now
 
I've also been burning for a few weeks already. Mostly light loads, but I'm trying to use my stove as my only heat source this winter. So far, so good!

Ashful, if you're north of Collegeville and south of Emmaus, you might not be too far from me!
 
Burning at night since early Oct here. We've gone through a little more than half cord and more kindling than I want to talk about.
I'm out of bed at 4AM so I stack the stove one more time before heading off to work. That gets the home warmed up for everyone else for the day.

Very close. I often eat dinner in Sellersville. I just use the Philly location for national recognition, and a small bit of anonymity.

It has been unseasonably warm east of the Mississippi. So far this season we've burned less than half a cord of red maple, mostly to chase away the chill and damp in the mornings. House gets hot and we let the fire go out. Last night it was 65° F outside; we didn't need a fire.

I am near State College, PA, and I have been burning for a couple of weeks, on and off. It hasn't really been cold enough, but it isn't warm enough to go without heat. So we are burning and sometimes open a window. Stupid? Maybe, but using the electric heat while I have a wood stove would be stupid too.

That's where I'm at, Wood Duck. It's the 'tween temp here. Burning the stove sparingly and low, and sweating also. Might need to add another fan til the temps cool off
 
Been unseasonably warm here too. Had a few nights in the mid twenties but couldn't burn at that time because of a sick dog. He had to wear one of those lampshade things on his head for two weeks. No way I would light the stove. He always lies so close to it that I could just imagine that plastic cone melted to his head.

No I don't think so, that's exactly what I do here. We are well past shoulder season in the Rockies but earlier in the season we would be burning and had a few windows open. With our house being closed up all winter its nice to give it some fresh air from time to time.
 
In NW Jersey, been running on and off since mid October, nothing note worthy of 24/7 yet, and when I do have the stove lit im burning low and slow, no blower. Soon my friends, we'll be full bore, then we'll be talking about spring and summer.
 
It's been chilly here for a good little bit now too. Like -7 to -15c. 24/7 burning here. Normally I'd be feeling whiny when it's this cold out because my old stove sucked so much wood it was like having a second job keeping it going. First year with my new stove and I almost feel like it's cheating. Lol.
 
Pretty much singing the same story as most of above. I am not going crazy with burns with cheap oil prices. I have a limited supply of dry wood this season, but been burning on and off since october. Nights have been cold, but day time highs have been 45-50ish so i let it burn out in the morning on most days.
 
Now this is just getting crazy.....temps in the upper 50's and low 60's coming up this weekend, possibly setting record highs. I burn but let it go out as it would be like a sauna in the house!

It'll go from this right into freezing cold bad weather, just watch.....

I remember being outside in shorts and tee shirt Oct. 9, 2013, and sweating my arse off in record heat, and we all remember how that record winter turned out. Blizzards and power outages.

Oh, I remember for sure!

As a side note, PPL is installing HUGE 85 foot tall telephone poles in around us, 15-20 feet into the ground so they can put better and stronger lines up to try to avoid such problems in the future. They just look strange, so tall and overbearing....it'll take awhile to get used to them!
