Hi everyone: I noticed this flaw that looks like a crack in the head of my ax. I can't feel it with a fingernail but it is visible on both sides. Should I stop using it? Should I contact Fiskars? fff7e602fc133cbd8b2837a3ca589b69.jpgb4eec2fd2712a88b388bd404f1360a6b.jpg

Can't tell what kind of damage if any that is.They warrantied one for me due to a chip in the blade. All done by email. Looks like you've gotten some use outta that one but if you do decide to contact them I can tell you they were very good about it.

In my last career I used to be a c.g.s.b. and s.n.t. welding and metallurgical inspector That definitely looks like a couple of cracks. The one looks more defined than the other. Do they show on the other side at all. As well you could take a magnet and some iron filings and do a home grade magnetic particle inspection

Sorry just re read ya that both sides not top and bottom of edge. Almost certainly a crack then. But again like I said your could do your own magnetic particle or penetrant dye inspection more often than not the crack goes further than you can visually see

Could've been caused by a defect in the rough material. Would need to know more about their manufacturing process. Ie. cast, forged, machining, grade of steel used, heat treating or hardening process etc.

Maybe a factory defect? Sure looks like it flares out abnormally to the outside as well.

Its a crack. My guess is that by the sounds of their customer support you will get a replacement. I would also guess that eventually it will actually break off that corner.

I put in a warranty claim this morning. The auto email from Fiskars said that unless they have a a follow up question I will receive a replacement in 12 - 15 business days.

I got home from work tonight and guess what, my new replacement X27 was waiting for me. What a standup company Fiskars is.

Did you have to send the cracked one to them?

No. I think I will destroy it so no one gets hurt. Maybe make a pickaroon out of it.

I also had a great experience with their warranty. Short story is my Dad came over to split some wood. He had been splitting on the ground for 30yrs.

Me: "You know Dad splitting ontop of a stump is easier on the back"
Dad: "Nah I'm good"
Me: "You should try it"
Dad (reluctant) "ok"

First swing he overshoots it and cracks the head right off.

Call Fiskars tell them the story, the guy laughs asks for my address and sends me a new one. Completely our fault and Fiskars is still awesome.

Every modern, bought, hand tool I have is from the aforementioned company for that reason. My wife and I live so far from any town that I physically can't get anywhere to buy new tools in a convenient time frame. They send em right to your door when you break em, no questions asked.

Never gamble with anything that looks like a crack. If you think it may be a crack, treat it as such, contact them and get a new one sent out.
