Burning Hunk

Got a possibility of some free basswood and was wondering if others have burned it. Quite low on the sweeps BTU chart, but I figured it's free and already cut to length, so how bad could it really be? I don't think it's a huge amount, so maybe good for shoulder season, and if it's a hot burner like pine, maybe good to get things going in the morning?

Any thoughts out there?

I've got some Basswood = Linden. I'd compare it to poplar. Dries fast, very light, goes punky fast if left damp. If it falls down, I burn it but I'm not sure I would want to use up valuable space in the wood shed.

Just looked up the BTU numbers and they are identical. Good call.;em

This is easy picking, so probably worth it, but I'll keep it separate from my other piles so I know not to try and get an overnight burn out of it.

I cut some earlier in the Spring that I was going to use for kindling next year, but at the rate I am NOT using wood so far that might not be necessary.....it was very nice clean looking wood, and I know it is a low heat throwing wood, but for kindling or quarter splits I think it would work great!

We have cottonwood here. Same amt of btus. Great for shoulder season or adding in as a restart/reload to get the stove and flue warmed back up quickly! I load it to get oak going quicker for faster damping down and longer burn out of the oak. It is a little ashy and will fill the stove quick if used alone.

Ditto to all of the above......one note.......it really stinks when burned. Keep the door of the stove closed!!

It burns. Just keep an eye on it. It could float away.

I found it good for the fire pit - in large pieces.

A lot of work for little heat.

I have both poplar and basswood saw logs in a pile. Rest of the trees are slowly getting picked up for OWB fuel. I find that when dry the poplar is better with the basswood hardly giving enough heat to use as kindling. If you can find heartwood with a grain it makes beautiful paneling when cut into shiplap strips of 2-6" wide. Too soft for flooring, that's where i used our poplar...
