Heading up to the city for a building permit

Well, the stove. chimney kit and flue have been ordered, already received my DVL so I thought I'd better get my building permit so I am ready. It should take a few days for the city and fire department to review the DuraVent
manuals and the Drolet stove manual but I don't think there will be a problem with any of that.

I am off work the week after Christmas so I imagine that will be when I do the installation, that is if everything is approved and I have all of the equipment.

Just thought I'd mention.

Well no, but I haven't gone up yet, I'm going after work. That is an excellent idea!
I wish I was a better artist. Still got a couple of hours to do it so thanks for the suggestion.

I would bet they have seen the Duravent manual before so that part won't take them 5 minutes. The stove specific information they will be comparing with your sketch.

I thought the same thing. I don't know about their knowledge of the stove but they want that too.

Right now I'm just trying to figure out how to best draw a picture of where the stove will go.

Update:

I'm in limbo now unable to apply for a permit myself because I'm not the home owner nor a licensed contractor.
I will hear from inspector LA Donna tomorrow morning after she checks with someone about just what permit is needed.
My Step Father will have to apply for the permit and possibly have to sign a affidavit the he's doing the work. He's 83 and there's no way he can do the work, perhaps he can just oversee the work being done. We'll know more tomorrow.

Man, I've even drew a sketch and couldn't given it to them but it'll all work out. Hope they don't make me get a contractor.

My stove permits were mechanical permits, done online, with nothing other than a description of "new woodstove installation". The inspector shows up and I provide all manuals proving the install is right.

I got word this morning to get a mechanical permit, and your way is exactly how it has to happen here only instead of calling them manuals they said I'd need the UL listings. I'll call them manuals (pdf's) I'll have to take my stepfather up to city hall so he can get the permit and I have to admit I wouldn't want
just anybody to be able to get a building permit for work on my place, I'd want to be involved.
We'll see how it goes when I get him up there.

Stepfather and I were able to pick up the permit yesterday. Now we've got to get to work.

Today we pick up and deliver the stove, assembly and get it into place for installation tomorrow. My son-in-law wants to
help but he can't be there until tomorrow so at least we can get that heavy lifting out of the way today. I sure hope I got everything.

Hey guys, I thought I'd better get in here and let you in on my progress.
I'm still not finished but I've got quite a bit done.

Inside the house I cut through the layer of sheet rock and found an old tongue and groove bead board ceiling.
I'm guessing this addition or el must have been some sort of a porch or screened in room at some point
eventually becoming a fully enclosed room. Under the bead board there was no insulation though ,
my son and new son-in law, cut and installed some insulation guards around the opening so I could take
pictures for the building inspector. I don't know if that is required or not but since there is no access to the attic area
I wanted to have pictures in case the inspector wanted to see it.

Through the roof wasn't good! It is a pretty steep pitch so we were mostly working from the edge of the ladder
with someone holding it at the bottom. My initial hole cut was too high so I had to keep cutting out the bottom
and I was worried my flashing might not cover it. In the end it did, but just barely. I also had to cut the high side
of the flashing around the flue so it would lay down on the roof, and by that time it's was getting dark.
I was trying to put the high temp silicone around the ring and seal the flashing down
and found it's pretty easy to get your hands into the gook. I really hate that, I was a mess.

My flue is probably about 7' above the roof to meet the requirement of being 2' above anything within 10' though
I really didn't measure it. I started out with 3 3' foot sections of flue hoping I would only need two but soon saw
the third one is needed. It looks alright but I am not too happy nor trusting of my flashing job so I've ordered
some 8" adhesive backed flashing to go all around the perimeter where the flashing meets the roof.
I do not want any water to get in.

On the inside and the next day, we moved the stove off of the moving dolly and started to assemble the stove pipe
only to find my DuraVent Plus kit didn't have a good way to connect the DVL to the chimney box. I'm sure there is a
way but I could figure it out with the parts I had so we quit for the evening.
Yesterday I called NorthLine Express and ordered a 6DVL/ADT DruaBlack Chimney Adapter as well as a roof support bracket.
I asked about the roof support and was told something about every 4' there should be a support and with that pipe sticking
up in the air so far I knew I needed one, and with the holiday shipping season in full swing I imagine it will be a few days until I get my stuff.

I forgot to mention I also ordered a Soot Eatery Rotary Cleaning system to clean out the flue. I am going to have to go at it from
the bottom up because there is no way to come in from the top. Is this a fairly common way to clean the flue?

Yes, I'll have pictures when I get the system finished so I'll need some help from you all on how to upload and post them.

I really want to thank you all, you have been so helpful and I appreciate that, and I know my mother surely does. She is just
thrilled with it all, and I know she can't wait to get started. I have tried to give her everything she needs to be successful even
down to the flue thermometer and moisture meter. Now she will be able to have heat and offer protection to here family when
the infrastructure crashes. I think she is pretty sure that is going to happen. Just a reminder, she's pretty much a prepper. I don't mean
anything bad saying that, who really knows what will happen.
