We have a gas (propane) stove insert in our living room. This is original construction, not a conversion from wood. (We actually have 2 back to back, another in the kitchen, each with its own chimney)

The chimney is what looks like a 6-8 inch diameter stainless steel chimney.

We wanted to replace the gas insert with a pellet insert, but after placing the order and having the installers out, we're told "The chimney is too small for their insert". WHY??? can't they just use the existing cmney and tie it in? I know they need an insert for an old brick chimney, but shouldn't a stanless steel chimney installed in 2004 be good for a pellet stove????

Thanks for your advice!

Maybe what they were referring to was the firebox area was too small to install an insert. I know some of the gas fireplaces are quite small and some insert will not fit the opening and sometimes they are also nor deep enough. You could ask them to explain what exactly is too small.

If you go to Quadra-fires web site, or Harman's web site, you can see the size firebox needed for each of their inserts. Just pick an insert and then choose Specifications and you will see all you need to know.
