Maple, maybe? If so, different types than I'm used to seeing.

That sounds like elm.

Being a big help, aren't I ???

:p

I think maple as well. It is hard to tell, but looks like the twigs are opposite. Opposite twigs I use the acronym MAD Buck. Maple, Ash, Dogwood, buckeye.

Just saw that it is hard to split and stringy. Maple is usually fairly easy to split. Was it in a windy location?

Hahaha anything helps I know there's alot of it on our property. They came and cut out pines and knocked a bunch of these maple/elder/elm down. been pulling them out and bucking them up but they're a pain to split.

The pic of the one standing it just one of similar type the the branches are facing down from when they felled all the pine. Messed up a bunch of them

Maybe they're hybrids
:p

Oak is generally easy to split tho........Just my .02

Mind you its very green very wet wood. It had gotten pushed down so roots were still in ground but trees was about 12" off the ground on the horizontal so it needed cut. Trying to do some clean up. But I'd really like to know what I have. Im particular so I try and separate my wood into different stacks by species but I'm also new to this so I just want to know what different kinds of wood I have around

Nearly certain it isn't Oak, of any variety. Snap a picture of the end grain please.

Here's some more

All the same just the big one was outside in the dark with the flash on and I brought the smaller one inside for better light

OK I don't know much about maple or box elder as burning wood. I've mostly just burned oak or hickory. How do maple or box elder burn?

They aren't really in the same playing field as Oak and Hickory, but they are nice for mixing in.

By not in the same playing field. Like baseball to softball or baseball football. How far off are they. Not "ideal" for burning?

Do a good search for firewood BTU chart. I believe there are also a few links on the forum somewhere. I burn all types of maple. I won't go out of my way for box elder. I believe box elder is considered one of the soft maples.

Box elder is a type of maple and the least useful for firewood. It is good wood for kindling or quick fires.
Box elder to oak would be like tee ball vs major leagues.

If it is a soft maple(silver, red) the firewood is better, but still not in the league of oak. Think high school, maybe college ball. I burn a lot of this every year because I have easy access and it seasons quickly.

Hard maple(sugar, black) is the best maple to burn. Some may say it is minor league vs majors. Others would argue Yankees vs cardinals. Good stuff if you ask me.
