So the fire marshall just knocked on my door and told me about the embers coming from the chimney outside? Any ideas why I am having alot going out?

What is your vent setup, are the ash deflectors flipped down,I don't see how embers would even be able to make it out the chimney unless the deflectors are flipped up.

I have a horizontal vent and will sometimes see embers coming out but usually on start up. They extinguish pretty quick but it is bedrock right under the vent here.
Did you have the stove install inspected? Have the required clearance outside that is free of shrubs, trees, plants (ground to vent termination)?

They are down beside the ash pan. I have a 7 foot duravent inside the house and through the chimney

He said he had never heard of a pellet stove. I turned it down because the embers only seem to go out when it's running on the higher setting...he went away and I turned it back up...but I have to see if I can lessen it...

Yep that's what he said....he said he was going to go home and read up on it. He said he wasn't even sure if my pellet stove was legal? I said well...the person who approved the installation in the town said it was...so....

Can't believe a fire Marshall never heard of a pellets stove. Lol. Have you cleaned your exhaust recently? Possible build up lighting up and blowing out? Or if you've done a really good cleaning maybe some ash that was loosened is igniting and blowing out.

Hope you have the install inspection report tucked away safe in case he comes back. Where are you in NJ? Can't believe that a fire marshal doesn't know about pellet stoves....
He said one of my neighbors complained because the embers coming out of the vent will cause a fire.
I have not cleaned my exhaust yet. This is my first season...I was going to have it professionally cleaned in the spring. Should I clean it before then?

I just cleaned mine for the first time after about a ton and it was pretty caked up. Not saying that's your issue just a possibility.
Okay dumb question here....since the stove pipe is in the house....how do I go about cleaning it? I watched the videos of everyone sticking a leaf blower up there and blowing it out but that was outside....

You'd hook up the leaf blower, the vacuum part of it where your pipe terminates on the outside. Make sure to leave your stove door open.

If you go the leaf blower route you might wanna wait until your neighbors are not home,if they complain about an ember I can't imagine what they would say about an ash cloud.

You have too much draft. The stove combustion/exhaust is pulling half burned pellets out of the pot, and sending them through and up your chimney. They continue to burn on the journey up and out of the chimney. You may want to see if you can turn the stoves draft setting down just a little bit.
My venting goes into 6' stove pipe, then out the thimble and up a 12-15' chimney. Had to turn my P61 draft voltage WAY down.....

Yeah best investigate the stove's operation, in spite of his ignorance on the tech. Sparks are sparks.
Heh, the sugar shack two houses down from me blows a column of embers 40' high like an ALCO, he would freak if he saw that after dark.
