I said that? Man, I never dig hot coals out, I musta fatfingered something big time...
Your post about letting your ashes build up gave me the idea of raking the coals out instead of raking them forward into a mound.

At least that is how us Morrow countians interpreted it. :p

I'll rake them forward sometimes, but I'll remove ash, rake the coalbed flat and load. Last night I loaded at 9:30, set the thermometer at 73, and 4:30 this morning had a 73 degree house. A pretty heavy heat load with the windchill of -13, but I was happy with that. I probably had another hour and a half worth of heat. I threw a piece of wood on one side of the firebox so it would off gas and two hours later my wife woke up and loaded. I loaded about a 3/4 load which was almost too much for the lenght of burn I needed. Like stihly, I usually load for time.

Everyone needs to realize that furnaces have many things to account for to operate correctly. Wood furnaces have about 100 more things in the equation. Which is kinda funny as most wood furnaces are DIY. I know epa anything wood wants complete cycles, adding a piece or 2 is counter productive, but sometimes necessary.
