First let me start by letting everyone know we currently have and love our Jotul Oslo (8 years) in our current house. That said we are designing a new home and I think the family room will be to tight (not long enough @ 17.5', current house is 24' long) for a freestanding wood stove and therefore we are considering a zero clearance fireplace. We would create an alcove to "push" the zero clearance outside of the family room and thru the exterior. I really want another Oslo as in my opinion it will heat more efficiently (and looks amazing) but if we can't make it work can anyone recommend either the Pacific Energy FP30 or RSF Opel3?

Thanks,
Budge

we've installed both, The FP30 is really just a summit in a zero clearance can. It also was some large clearances for framing. That being said it's a great secondary burn unit and can heat 2500 sq ft easily.
The RSF opel 3 has been around quite a long time and is not a secondary burn unit unless you add in the catylitic converter. It will not heat as much as the FP30 as it's a smaller firebox, its great for about 1500 - 1800 sq ft
If your willing to build a alcove for a zero clearance, why not create a alcove for the wood stove to sit in? I don't think it would take up much more space weather you do the stove or the zero clearance.
