I'm not crazy about leaving the stove on all day when i'm at work but around this time of year its necessary to leave it on at least 1. I did put an IP camera on it which i can view from my cell phone so i can check up on the stove whenever/wherever i want.

Anyone else leave their stove on but have video to check up on it?

Yep, I have one. It's not a crazy idea. I use a pan-tilt-zoom webcam which is also part of my home security system. During the burn season it stays pointed at the stove.

Ok now that i'm thinking more about it, I could even be more paranoid than I already am. Does anyone have or know of a smoke detector that can send me a text message if it detects smoke?

That would be far out.

We run our stoves, one or both 24/7 this time of year.

Being able to monitor them from my cell phone would be sweet when we are out.

What is the easiest set up

We have a cellular modem from Verizon that's on 24/7

I would love to be able to get a peek at the stoves from my iphone 6 plus.

More info please.

We have a security system that also has fire/smoke alarm, buttttt being able to see real time wassssup would be great.

Thanks

Great
Your text message says, "Dude, seriously, this is your smoke alarm, the house is about half burned, do you want me to call the FD ? "

Ahhhhh, gotta love technology

well Snowy, I have several Foscam IP cameras which i use outside. They are not outdoor cameras but i mounted them under eaves and I havent had one break in years. I just got this idea the other day to monitor the stove. I was going to buy another foscam but then i remember one of my customers gave me the IZON camera for the iphone. its been in a drawer for years. I plugged it in, installed the app and went through a brief setup process and it works. its not the best but i can see the stove from my phone. The IZON doesnt move and it doesnt have the best reviews, but for me i already had it so might as well use it. If it breaks, I do prefer the Foscams which pan and tilt from the phone. they are in the neighborhood of $50-60 and can be a bit confusing to set up if you are not a pro. However from reading about all your other projects, I'm sure it'd be cake for you.

I just did some research and found the Nest Protect. It is a smoke alarm and CO detector with wifi and text alerts for $99.00. That is totally worthwhile. If i get a text that there is smoke, I can then see it on the camera and either come home or call the fire dept. In the very least the dog gets saved.

In some regards technology is wildly out of control, but I think a connected smoke alarm is a great use. My house is remote. nobody would notice it was on fire until it was just one giant clinker in the middle of the woods.

I use a Foscam WiFi camera that is easy to setup. They also have an app to access the camera remotely. Some basic knowledge of your network setup is helpful.

Do people also have web cams for their oil furnaces or electric baseboard heat? Seriously, pellet stoves are meant to be run 24/7. If you are so nervous that you need a nanny cam to watch your stove, why did you pick a pellet stove as a heat source? Isn't life stressful enough? I just crack up when people ask me "you don't leave that running while you're not home, do you?" Ummmmm....of course I do.

Leave both stoves on, never even thought about needing to have a camera on them. I got over any nervousness about leaving a stove running about 3 days after I got the P61a. But then, I've lived with a non-enclosed fireplace (that made me nervous as a kid going to bed with it still crackling) and wood stoves, so pellet stove is tame by comparison.

If people used some kind of monitoring system, there would be less problems at the end of the day when you cant get parts or a tech out for service. They would know to run home or have someone else check it.
The wifi thermostats are nice for this but way too pricey since i dont run off a thermostat.
I have considered a cam just for the fact of power outages.. a peek at the stove now and then would be nice too, but if the cam goes out then i need to get home and re-light the stove or get backup power. Instead of waiting until pipes freeze.

I had considered a cam on the Pellet Furnace in the basement however I guess we would notice if it went out and being upper middle aged we can still get up and check on it if the need arises. If I had any thoughts that the furnace needed to be watched remotely it wouldn't be in my house very long!

Pellet stoves aren't designed to be the only source of heat so we have a 2 year old gas furnace that is set at 60 degrees if something goes wrong with the pellet heaters.
I'm All in favor of electronics to make our lives better however do we really need a gadget that we can turn on appliances remotely (dishwashers, washing machines, furnaces etc.) or are they just toys that we want? I think the electronics Gadget thing is getting a bit out of control.

Many pellet stoves and pellet furnaces are indeed designed and manufactured to be the sole source of heat for a home.

My worry is not about leaving them run, but rather, especially on the Weeeee Stove that its fire pot needing to be cleared.
Normally about every 6-8 hours max the pot needs to be given a swish and the crap cleared.
After this the clinker will build up to the point that the shells start BACKING UP the drop tube.

This is not a good thing.
The fire then gets lazy and then clearing all the fuel in the tube makes a huge fire.
WE have to turn the unit on draft only and let it sit and burn out the pot, but this will still leave the materials up the tube.
As soon as the door is opened and the clinker kicked out of the pot all the shells in the tube fall into the pot and result in a HUUUUUUUUGE fire and Smoke Show (no pun intended)

This is a normal thing with the Prodigy running on shells.
The ADV 2T will run for a day or longer before ashes build up and start falling back into to pot.

If we are away for an evening out it's no biggy, as we clear the pot on Wee stove before we go and are going to be home in plenty of time.

But on occasion we head over to the Daughters to watch the kids for a day and it can run into much longer.

Being able to view the unit and how it's doing would be great, not to mention having a window on the place to see if anything other than GOOD is happening.

I have a renter down in the downstairs but do not generally ask her to come up unless there would be an emergency situation.
I do have a push button code lock set on the back door with some codes that only allow one entrance, so if it was a dire emergency I could get assistance if we were away.

All the tech is cool, except when it's failure is a big PITA

A camera/s would be a passive little helper.

My worry is can it be hacked by snoops or prying eyes of big brother ???
The answer is likely yes it can.

Anything that has a computer connected with it can be hacked if somebody wants to bad enough.

Ahhh well such is life in the "TECH ZONE"

Just think what sort of a shock our life style would be to folks that lived in the early 1900's
My folks got a little peek at the computer age as they bough my daughter her first computer in the late 80's
The saw the cell phone come along as I had one with me when trucking.

But the generation before that would have been aghast to even imagine what we have today.

Jump online, snoop Amazon, ebay or ????? a few mouse clicks and in a couple days or so the little Brown truck pulls up and tosses some boxes on your porch.

Never have to leave the comfort of your easy chair and almost anything can be procured.

My other half's grand parents never even owned a car, or a TV.
The radio was their only link to the world.

Oh how we have changed.

My grand parents heated their home for years with a sawdust burner.
The dust was blown into the bunker in the basement and grandpa scooped it into the hopper on the burner and it fed by gravity into the grate.

The heat was captured in a large "Bonnet" and it rose naturally from the basement to the various parts of the house.
No fans, no electricity, NO COMPUTER, just easy cheap warmth.
The only adjustments was a little lever device on the wall upstairs the controlled the amount of sawdust being delivered to the fire, and the floor registers.

OMG how did they ever stand the pace

I'm with others. I let mine run all day whether home or not and never really give it a second thought. I just fill the hopper and give the pot a good scraping before leaving for the day.

Yes, i have a cam on my oil furnace as well. Its not really on my oil furnace, its really for my active sump pump, but i can remotely pan it to the furnace. I'm not nervous about leave the stove on with nobody home. been doing it for years. I do however want to be alerted in case there is some sort of problem with it while i'm not there. The cam is helpful. i can take a peek at it, see everything is alright and the dog snoozing happily in front of it.

I picked up the Nest Protect unit today. took 10 minutes to connect to the wifi, download the app and screw to the ceiling. took another few minutes to light a fire in a metal bucket to test if it really alerted my phone. it did. Guess i'm good to go. It will also alert me to low batteries, has a sensor so it turns on a low powered night light if you walk near it, and self tests itself periodically. not a bad unit.

I also found out later, they make the Roost Smart 9v battery. When used to power a regular old smoke detector, the battery connects to wifi and the battery texts you if the alarm is sounding. now thats neat. I would have went that option if i had known about it.

But i dont regret the nest.

I'm sure the Nest smoke/co detector can do it, though I'm not sure you need the Nest thermostat as well, probably not.

[edit]

Ha, I just got to the bottom of the thread and see you got the Nest. Anyhow, I have several Foscams as well for security. Now, I'm going to have to readjust one of the cameras so that it not only sees the front door, but also the stove!

We have a complete complex alarm system in the place, butttttttt, a window on our world could certainly help avoid an issue from becoming a real nightmare.

We are out a ways from FD and PD so being able to see wasssssup would be an advantage.

Been heating with pellet stoves since 92 and don't have any phobia's about running them 24/7

Now what would be cool would be a complete data stream app for the stove that could be accessed from the smart phone.

Ahhhh well, just more stuff to fret about.
