Hello everyone, I have a 9hp Van Guard that starts and will die with out the choke on 100%. It would run before on half choke but surge a little, now even on 100% choke it won't stay running. I have taken off the carb, it was clean but i cleaned it anyway with carb cleaner, I also cleaned the fuel filter, but again it was cleaned. I bought this engine brand new, it has maybe 25-30 hours on it. Any ideas? Thanks everyone. Fespo

I'm no expert, but maybe you didn't clean the carb enough? Do you have any idea why, like it was laying around all summer with gas in it, or something like that? I had that same engine attached to a generator I bought on eBay a long time ago, and it seems that it had been run with no oil. Ran a little and stopped. I recall that a new connecting rod fixed it, since there are no bearings. Not your story, I'm sure. How about the usual thing of a gas cap that's not vented anymore?
 
Not an expert on small engines but sounds like plugged passages in the carb.
When it was cleaned did you use compressed air to blow out all passages.
It is the only practical way to make sure that I passages are clean.

I never leave the gas in the tank, I did take the carb out off the engine, removed the jets and blew it out with compress air. This is my Im stumped, everything looks clean, even the bowl was clean. I put this new engine on my troy bilt tiller and I use it maybe two time a year.
 
When you have to choke down an engine to get it to run
I suspect an air/ fuel ratio problem in this case
to much air or not enough fuel
So I would check Carb, Vac. leak fuel lines and tank /vent cap
and a filter if it has one .
 
Ok guys ,the air filter is clean, the fuel filter is clean. its the type with the plastic bowl that you can remove and clean. I will check the gas tank cap. I will try to run it with off or not closed 100%. Do you guys think I should buy a carb rebuild kit?
 
I'm no expert but that's probably the next step. I did it once with a 2 stroke trimmer awhile ago and that turned out okay. I forget what parts besides gaskets came with it.
 
High speed jet is plugged. Does the carb have a round bowl on the bottom of the carb? Remove the nut or plug and drop the bowl. You'll see the brass jet going up into the carb. Very tiny hole will get a small bit of gunk and block the flow. Spray carb cleaner through the small openings to force cleaner backwards through the jet . I usually take a bristle off a wire brush to probe the hole clean. Very tiny, becareful , you don't want to enlarge the orifice.

Partial choke or full choke to keep an engine running is a sure sign of fuel/carb issue. Gar-own-tee it.
90% chance of carb issue.
10% the rest of the fuel system.
 
Push to prime will add some headaches as well , they develop air leaks; or one or both of the two orifices are plugged.
 
Thanks for the help everyone, once this bitter cold brakes I will take a look into the carb and try again.
 
Ok guys, i took the carb 100% apart and cleaned with carb cleaner the blew it out with air. Same problem it would start would not run more then a few seconds. I tried with the gas cap off, I made sure fuel was flowing and gas filter is clean. So I guess a rebuild kit ? Fepo

I forgot to add the jet were clean no blockage at all.
