i see threads on here a lot about scoring free wood. well i happened upon a great find yesterday. a house around the corner had a white oak that has been dead for about a year but the house was for sale and for some reason, the tree never got cut down. well someone bought the home about a month ago and they had it cut down yesterday. i went by yesterday afternoon and asked them what they were going to do with it. they said, just leave it there and come get all i wanted. i was pumped about that b/c it is a huge white oak w/o any roth, but then the guy that cut the tree down lives a couple blocks from me and said he had some wood in his front yard and come get all i want. i was thinking it would just be a few pieces, maybe 1 truck load. oh no, it's a big red oak all cut into 18" pieces. so i go today to load it up and he says there is another one in his back yard and it is another big red oak. i loaded my 6x10 trailer down twice today and have at least 4 more loads to get. i think im going to go play the lottery b/c i never get this lucky

Only way it could have been better is for them to deliver it.

i thought about pics after i got half the wood off the trailer. ill get pics tomorrow after i get the trailer loaded. im going to have to take at least half of it to a buddy's house b/c i dont have room for all of it. my wife officially thinks i'm crazy b/c of how excited i am about this :)

It's crazy that the wives don't seem to get that this "heating stuff" really flips a primal switch in the male of the species, generally speaking. Primo, primo score. Now for the exercise in patience while it dries.

Good deal ... since you really can't beat free ... especially with it being oak.

Great score! Now just watching it dry for 3 years........LOL

We got 6 more loads today. There is still a lot left too but it had to be cut bc it was too long. The biggest pieces were 30" diameter. You'll have to excuse the weird guy laying on the wood. Now to get to splitting

Here is what could have been a nice score for me if I wasn't too lazy. We had a bit of wind Sunday. I got call from park and rec because the tree crew needed our crane truck for tree removal. I worked with them all day. We had three calls to go to. All red oak. I think we had three six wheelers loads of nice stuff. Plus a lot of it got chipped.

You passed on those? !!!!!!

Belive it or not but yes. It's kind of sad because it was all red oak. And not much work involved.

i try to take advantage of any opportunity i can get. especially if it involves anything "free". but im also been called cheap a few times :). there is still quite a bit of wood left that i could get but it is piled up pretty high and will involve climbing on the pile to sort out what is big enough and then cutting it in small enough lengths to move. if it is still there this weekend, im sure ill be over there trying to get what i can. i might not get another opportunity this good for a long time.

You should have called me I would have walked there to get that stuff, even though I'm in IL.......

I posted on some Facebook yard sale sites to offer to take away fallen trees after the storm and have several cords of cedar and oak (I'm sorry but Idon't know the difference between oaks), and am getting more replies every day. I need another property just to store it all!!! My wife yells at me but all I see is FREE HEAT!!!
