Hi all,

New here and looking for info from the highlands of Scotland.

Have had this cheap electric splitter for 6 years now. Served me well.

Now find the only way to get ram to return to start is by hand. Apart from this the machine performs well.

Took it to a local who repairs farm tools and machinery to be met with the usual reply " not worth fixing....you can get a new one for £150.00"

Not really bothered about the cost but was wondering if I can repair the one I have.

Help appreciated.

Yes, this is what I thought. I used to own one just like it from DR. These type have the hydraulic cylinder inside the main frame. They are very complicated, have internal gaskets that are prone to failure (which is what happened to yours) and almost impossible to find, and are extremely hard to assemble and disassemble. After the internal gaskets failed for the second time, I discarded mine.

I think I would take the advice of your repair person, and get one that has an external hydraulic cylinder that can be easily repaired in case of failure.

Thanks....will probably just do that.

If you can retract it by hand, the valving is working but the mechanical return spring is probably not.

Can you add an external spring to retract it? The broken spring parts inside mu\ight do damage later, but adding to the outside would be easier than taking apart the cylinder

Do you have to pull up on the handle that engages the hydraulics in order for the ram to return?
