I'm wondering what kind of wood this is? My dad dropped it off. Not sure whether to split/stack it or burn it in my fire pit

My gut reaction is to say it looks like black locust . . . but a closer shot of the bark would help (plus admittedly I am better at identifying trees by the leafs).

Can you give us more to go by? How about a pic of a split so we can see the end and also the end grain of a round. Maybe a closer shot of the bark too.
As to whether or not this should go into your stacks or fire pit, that should depend on how far ahead you are with what you already have C/S/S.

From the bark I think locust. But I can't be sure. If it's yellow inside when you split a piece you'll know for sure. Its not pine, TOH, or poplar. Is save it for the burner.

I hope no one minds if I hi-jack this thread. Neighbor has a tree fall down in the winter. I can't tell what it is. My dad is guessing hickory. One thing is for sure. Its darn heavy.

Agree that it is hickory. You are thinking of shagbark hickory. What you have appears to be pignut hickory

I think it is a Shagbark, but not one with very shaggy bark. Some are a lot Shaggier than others.

Thanks. I figured people might get sick of 100 new old id posts. I probably figured wrong. Either way I have 4 total suggestions that it's hickory and nothing else. So I'm pretty happy
