I'm going to be installing my woodstove tomorrow and was reading the chimney instructions awhile ago. It's duravent chimney. and I read a line that said
Apply a high-temperature (500OF), non-hardening waterproof sealant around the chimney at the point where the Storm
Collar will meet the chimney just above the Flashing.

The guy in the stove store didn't mention it and he's closed now. I took a trip to Lowes and all I found were stuff to use around brick inside and brick chiney and it drys hard. and firestop caulk which says to only use indoors.

So...anyone know what I should be using for this application ? Or can I just use RTV sealer like I'd use on engine gaskets ?

Not a huge deal as that's close to the last thing to do and won't hold up the installation, it'll just hold up the firing of the stove.

Thanks,
Nick

You can prolly get away with regular silicone. Me, personally, I'd be going to the hardware store and buying a tube of 500 or 600 degree hi temp silicone. Most hardware stores have Rutland hi temp in stock. Lowes & Home Depot usually do also.

Are you sure it's not 500 degree silicone? I just finished siliconing my fireplace chimney top damper and used Rutland 500 RTV high heat silicone. Found it at Menards by all the fireplace/woodstove stuff.

Just don't use ultra copper or orange high temp silicone. The installer used a semihardening gray colored sealant on my collar and it is very hard to see.

You can wait until you get the right stuff. It will not adversely affect the installation, it just keeps out moisture from running down the flue pipe.

I found the stuff this morning at Tractor Supply.
But ran into a roadblock anyway as it looks like the chimney comes through the attic too close to the ridge and I need to do an offset in the attic. The stove store is not open today to get the offset elbows :-(
