This guy won the lottery of life.

Happened on the Tappan Zee, a few days ago, caused big delays.

Looks like the rear axle came off.

Yeesh that was pretty close. I'm on the Tap fairly often and always wonder how that movable barrier would behave in a crash..

Phew, so glad that didn't turn out worse. I have been on the Tappan Zee many times. As a young lad I saw the original being constructed. Dad took us on a ride on it right after opening day. Traffic kept on getting heavier over the years and now it can get very crowded. It's amazing that the person had a dash cam to capture it all.

LG, that is a story that will travel with the child for life. Quite the contrast to our boys who took their sweet time coming out to the world with 36 & 26hr labors. We walked every square foot of the hospital corridors on those days.

It goes to show you that situational awareness can save your life. The truck gave warning signs and made some loud noises that spoke volumes. Get the heck out of there.

Check the mirrors constantly. Listen for issues. Driving is sport...and the game is having fun and staying alive. As a rider...being aware has saved me many many times. One time I even had a Subaru skidding sideways at 65mph....quick throttle blip and instinctual push on the bar, saved me from a bad wreck. One of the reasons I will never ride cruisers and always performance bikes.

As far as the barriers...just remember that a full cement barrier will NOT stop an 18 wheeler...it will only help to slow or direct it.

IDK the flexibility of the barrier helped keep the trailer on its side and retained a lot of the debris, but it also slid across the two left-most lanes of oncoming traffic. I think the permanent dividers used on most bridges would have held up better.

The Tappan Zee is a beautiful bridge with beautiful scenery when crossing it, but it is very narrow, with no shoulders to accommodate disabled vehicles.

I always feel a little nervous driving it.

Glad i was not TGHAT GUY! I woulda peed myself :oops:

It sure is. Can be tough having an infrastructure that was built so long ago. To get to upper NY I normally drive on parts of the Northern (moderately narrow and winding) to the Cross Island (very narrow but straight). Then use the Hutchinson (very narrow, bumpy and winding) to avoid the congestion of the GWB/Major D. On a good day you have to be on your toes, if you add any weather at all it is a white knuckle ride.

I've been across that bridge, twice. Same trip, coming & going. I thought it was a bit hairy, but the real hairy part came not far after crossing it on the way back. Dude in a bombed out small car of undetermined make, lost his left rear wheel as he was Mario-Andrettying past me on the left. Scared the crap out of me, and I imagine him too. I still don't know how he saved it without taking anyone else out - immediately veered right, crossed right in front of me, and continued across the right lane, before coming to rest against the far right barrier. His wheel did the same thing, just a bit further down the highway. Craziness. I had to pull over for a breather at the next rest stop.

My bud and I went one morning to drop off retaining wall block in Staten island, we went over the gothals bridge, that bridge is so narrow it makes the old tap seem like an airport runway.

It's not that bad. Just go extra fast so you're not on it for a long period of time. :)
