In my neck of the woods we call that Black Cherry
The bark looks like Birch but is black with white fleck
white flowers in spring and little cherry's in fall
Burns good smells nice

Cut it . . . sniff it . . . report back what it smells like. Black cherry often has a sweet smell to it.

Then there most be more or sub species because in my 200 acres
there is about 15 % Cherry that look and grow the way that is described
on those pages

So he's a tree hugger who knows nothing, but you're the smartest tree man around? Nice.
OK "The Smartest Tree Man" around is going to explain on why he thinks (pretty muck knows) the OP's tree is not Black Cherry.
Judging from the growth rings and mulch in the picture, the tree looks about 25 years old and 12 - 14" dia.
Black cherry for sure at this size would have rough bark by now. Depending on how far north in MN the OP is, black cherry may not even grow there.
Wood found at the dump / land fills are usually put there by landscapers, landscapers usually remove and plant ornamental trees, hence most wood found at the dump are ornamental trees.
There are over 25 or so ornamental cherry trees in the US, there is only 1 Black Cherry tree, so my odds on being right are 25 - 1.
So claydogg, instead of your feeble attempts to insult other Hearth members, why don't you point out some facts that prove me wrong and help the OP get an ID on his ornamental tree......please we all await......

Nobody insulted you. You insulted the source listed with no reason other than to boost your ego. The wood is Cherry, the rest is simply not that important.
My point for "insulting"( for the record tree hugger is not an insult) is that a college project posted on the Internet from some kid taking a corse in dendrology should be taken for what its worth which is not much. Boosting my ego is not necessary, thats sort of the same thing as trying to make water wet.
