Need some opinions on cable comealongs

Though only 3/4 ton the rope winch would be a good tool for the job

If you want to make the next step up, look into a Grip Hoist made by Tirfor. The only limit is how much cable you have. It is used for rock work on hiking trails in my area.

Do note that there is difference in quality between Chinese look alikes and US built American Power Pulls. The Chinese versions can work but they are usually a PITA when under load, which is not the time you should be having to worry about a hoist

I use the Maasdam rope puller mentioned by Kevin. For most tree work much easier than a cable come-a-long. Unlimited length of rope, capstan, and also releases easy. Finally solves the too much slack issue with a come-a-long.

I'd 2nd the Wyeth Scott more power puller. it doesn't have the "infinite" pulling length of a tirfor style winch, but it does come with 30' of synthetic (15' @ double pull) but that is more than enough for what I personally use it for while cutting. any heavy duty style puller mentioned here is good insurance while going off the beaten path. I keep mine in the back of the SUV year round in case I get stuck in the middle on nowhere. if 30 feet of rope doesn't get me unstuck, it's my fault for getting in such a bad situation. got a good deal with an online coupon from treestuff.com

I've folded up too many of those Chinese two ton comalongs. Not buying another. When you need one, you need one. I've pulled engines with them, lifted walls, pulled dead tractors, and dead cars onto trailers, and even unstuck my pickup. Next time I'll buy a really good one that should last a lifetime.

Note that on the Chinese ones you can usually unhook the cable on one end and get double the pull length at half the pull power.

I've used a 1/2 ton steel-cable Maasdam for 30+ years. Still works fine, using it to restrain big sticks from ruining my day. Got a 1-ton a while back to provide a second "opinion". That cost something like $20. Got a snatch block too, for redirection of force.
