What type of wood is this

Bark looks like red oak or silver maple to me.
 
a split would be very revealing.
 
End of split does not look like red maple. Is that some punkiness?
 
Some sort of western softwood?
 
poplar, does it have a smell? are the round real heavy?
 
That first pic of the distinct yellow lines doesn't look like silver maple round here. The second pic looks more like it.
 
Silver maple's range is eastern US.
