Up to 800F on 1/2 a reload ....and it looks like it's taking off.

I went outside and got a piece of sopping wet firewood to throw in there, door open to let cool air in, opened windows in the room, for more cold air to the room.

This Chic doesn't scare easy after 8 years.

Fan on high.

I had this happen one time. Close the front door of the insert and minimize the air, and turn on the central fan. You need to circulate as much heat away from the insert into the room as you can. Also, if possible turn on the blower to start cooling down the unit.

Blower on high.... door cracked for cold air.... ticking like crazy..... new thermo pegged..... this is not like bark kicking off and off gassing, and then will cool down.

You know what I say with a runaway. Door open wide and let it suck that cold air in up and out. Just be careful of popping embers coming out.

With tossing in that wet log, get the Dixette on the roof for a look at the pipe tomorrow.

At this point the ticking should be the stove body temp coming down.

Thermo still pegged.... gonna throw in the wet wood.

Door open, windows open .... this is not normal, big time.

It's an "up tick" not a down tick.

Nope, not closing door, need all the cold air I can get in there.... thermo still pegged at 1000, which = 's 1200 +.

Sopping wet firewood in.

Cooling down .... holy chit, what a ride !

Phew!

By having the insert's front door open you are providing the maximum combustion air into the insert, I again advise closing it. I had a similar situation one time and only by going to minimum input air did the insert cool down.

I got this one. We are handling on FB messenger. And yes, the door wide open is the correct way. Been there and done this. More than once.

Door open, temp down to 800 on insert front..... I have more sopping wet wood just in case...

Run away like I've never seen before !!

Any thoughts on why it took off?

It is coming back down.

Good to hear that.

And it's going back up.

Just close the door, close the air all the way, and stop looking at it. Enjoy
Oh, and change you undies.

Thank you Hogs..

Sweat pants changed twice.

If you reloaded on a hot bed of coals with very dry wood, you got your recipe for soiled shorts.
