Finally got the slate on the walls...

Just some updated pics. It was a bi^ch. the Floor is pitched away from the house (use to be an open porch) There were lots of cuts to make out in the cold. I used 1/4" Hardy Backer behind the tile. I need to let the thinset dry tonight hence the Kerosene heater. I think the wood stove would dry the thinset too fast.

After, I still need to trim out the edges with some 1/4 round moldings.

I was at Lowes today. They had only one stove left maked "paid" "sold" I was tempted to rip the sign off. but Im a nice guy. Its not a "legal" setup anyways. Im 6' away from the second story with the pipe anyways. I keep a very small fire going so nothing gets out of control. If I sell the house Im talking the stove with me. I never leave the fire going when Im not in the next room ect.. but yes you are correct.


If I get an updated stove can i move it closer to the wall? My wife hates the stove int he "center" of the room as she says.

I did when I put the shims under the feet in the 2nd pic. ;-)

There are stove that have much tighter clearances that would fit in there. In the meantime, burn safely. You might even want a high-temp thermometer on the slate wall for safety guidance.

I dont have 3' all around. I have 2.5' on the side wall and 21" on the back wall. I gets pretty warm. but I can put my hand on it after many hours of burning with out a problem or burns. I keep a pretty small fire going. I dont open the air vents up all the way once it gets cooking in there.

the dog IS in heaven. He will not leave the porch unless someone comes to the side door. Hes like a lazy dog when the stove in burning. his toung hangs out and all.

I thought about it yes. But after a few hours with the backer board leaning on the window sils the night before I installed it on the walls. It was not that hot really. I figured with the slate mounted to the board using 5 big Globs of thinset to hold them on the backer board that there would be enough of a pocket of air. ;-)
