Should I try to burn the huge split?

I have a huge split - about 18" x 18" x 12"!
I'm considering putting it on a hot bed of coals for an overnight burn, but I'm unsure of how it might work?
It's some sort of Maple - seasoned.

I would give it a try. It may smoulder some but you should get a long slow low burn.

That would really depend on the stove. In this case, it wouldn't even fit in the F400.

Trying to get my head around this 18"x18"x12" ?

If the split fits, you must burn it.

Maybe ?

Could make 4 really nice 6x9x18" pieces out of it. Same as Be Green, a 12x18x18 wouldn't even fit in the door of my stove.

Super huge splits like this do not burn well. They are so big they have to be burnt all by themselves and will not give up enough gasses to self sustain.

Hi offroadaudio back when we heated with our Shenandoah I would use a large log like that as an overnight ‘banker’.

Hey if it fits it will burn…just fit some smaller pieces around the sides and you’ll have a nice overnight fire.

We just got a Quad 4300 step top without the manual so we're re-learning the fine art of wood burning.

The largest I use is one that fits in with a couple of smaller splits; that way you get a very long burn but the smaller splits help it get to the point where it will sustain over the coals.

this board is just too much!!! how funny :)!

I think it depends how old the wood is.
Those bigger splits take longer to dry properly - I think the seasoning may be a bigger problem than the size frankly.

If its dry enough and you have a good coalbed to put it on BURN IT!
Have to get the outside alligator skinned up though.

My theory is “ if it fits you must not quite”. But it also depends on you stove. I have a RSF Opel 3, which would make a great home for that split. Keep us posted on what happened and maybe some pictures

Update: my measurements were actually guesses when I posted - the split was really 18 x 16 x 11.
It had a big knot on one side that just kept it from sliding into the Quad. So I decided to split it - which was a good thing, because it was too moist inside to burn, despite having many deep radial cracks on the ends. Lesson here, big splits - big,big dry time........
