Just saying hello from Carver...
Have owned a Large Federal Dutchwest cat stove (model fa264ccl) 80's. Yes I have read about them being junk etc. and I've had my issues but overall it is a good stove that heats 1632 sq. feet economically! These stoves are not junk and so far I have only replaced the cat once and gaskets a couple times. Right now I need a new baffle (a $20.00 part) and that's after 20 years! I have found most of my problems to be draft related and it is running pretty good as I type this. This stove came with both a round and oval connector, spare latch, coal burning assessories (never been used) and all the tools to maintain this unit for a paltry price of $600.00 :) I really can't complain too much for all the service this stove has given me..

Let the bashing begin,

Ray

I remember the last days of North Carver Pine back in the mid '80s. I've never seen so much white pine lumber stacked in one place in my life.

Did they clear that for a construction project?

Hello Ray

North Carver Pine was one of the biggest white pine sawmills in the country before it went out of business in the mid to late '80s. They had a yard full of sawn lumber with no market that stretched about as far as the eye could see.

I think Brightman Lumber in Ansonnet (sp?) picked up where they left off.

At least that's how I remember it. Been awhile.

I moved to North Carver in the early 90s and I had some huge pines taken down. When the guy came to pick up the pine trees that were taken down he said that the trees were over a hundred feet tall and that this area had the largest pine trees in new england. I Don't know if the trees were that tall but I know some of the branches were so big I couldn't even reach my arms around them. I only wished I was burning wood then.

No bashing from this "Classic" stove owner. You should put that in your signature, and be proud of it!

I agree! Any stove run well and run long deserves some credit. And a cat at that! Hmmm, such problem stoves ain't they? ;-)

Hey Eric,
Yes there are some huge white pines around here!. I recall some being cleared when I built this house, some were around 6' diameter at the base! I never burn pine so I had no use for them. The trouble with white pines is they uproot in heavy winds in warm weather and snap off about 15' above ground when the ground is frozen... Had a couple snap and one skimmed the corner of my house and another almost got my dog ...

Hiya Brookie!
Yeah my stove is the same vintage as yours and it still heats my whole house.. I do take care of it and it still looks new. I read some claim the Taiwanese models were inferior but this model is very well made with high quality fine grain cast iron. Twenty years and just recently I found a cracked baffle just below my cat. The part costs $20.00 and secures with 4 bolts. Thanx for your vote of support!

Hey JP!
Big NH fan here. You live in God's country for sure. While it may be true the new stoves have been refined and are easier to use they also tend to cut corners in some instances. Some day I may replace this stove but it won't be an easy decision!

Hi Matt,
You're not far from me. I live down the street from the library and yes I get my wood from Middleboro. A guy I work with gives an honest cord of seasoned split wood (rt. now mostly oak) for $225.00 a cord. I remember paying $90.00 a cord green, split and delivered 20 yrs ago.

No just a guy I work with who does this as a side business. Who do you use if you buy wood and what is the current price?

I've done my share of that here so I know how it feels.. The 1st year I heated this house on pallets I cut up and they are a royal pain to cut up plus difficult to control. My neighbor built a new bog near my house a few years after that and dropped full length trees on the corner of my property from 8 acres being cleared which gave me about 10 cords I think. Now I just buy it and it still saves a bundle with oil prices over $3.00 per gallon.. Next year it's rumored the price of oil could hit $4.00 per gal. so I plan on being prepared...

And, don't forget to tell all those who aren't from these pahts, that it is pronounced, Kaahvah!

Hey Matt did you buy tree length wood that you were looking for? I'd like to get together and shoot the breeze if you're up for it some time. Drop me a line and I will call you if you're interested..
