Castile gasket

The Castile stove was changed at one point from a top air wash to a bottom air wash. The bottom air was system had some other design changes to make it work correctly. Whatever way your came form the factory you should re-install it the same way. The air wash is the spot were there is no gasket (either top or bottom). I can get the serial number cutoff point if you are interested.

Oooo I just re-read the main post and it looks like you might have an Insert not the stove? The insert has a top air wash, always has and still does. If yours is different than this post the serial number and mfg date, I can look into it.

From your orig post it sounds like your gasket is like the left picture above which is the top air wash. If it is I don't need your info, just re-install the gasket as it was and you will be fine. Since the firebox runs under negative pressure there can be an air wash at the top like that and smoke wont come out unless the blower stops or it starts smouldering really bad.

What is the purpose of the air wash? I'm asking because I was smelling smoke from my Castile insert, I thought the missing gasket was the cause, so I replaced the gasket all around the glass. Will this be a problem?

The air wash helps keep the glass clean for longer periods. The intake air is balanced to provide for the air wash gap, I would not seal all sides for this reason. If you were smelling smoke, it may be from another reason such as venting clogs or leaks.

You need to remove the top gasket and restore it to original right away. It will not burn correctly like that. If you smell smoke I would guess whee the pipe connects to the stove is leaking. Since the firebox runs under neg pressure and the vent is posi pressure, a leak after the combustion blower is much more likely.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have a Santa Fe that was installed this summer (insert) and the gasket was along the bottom. The install place called a few days later and said they thought it was wrong from the factory and they'd come out and switch it around...which they did. Now I'm wondering since the Santa Fe and the Castile are essentiall the same stove, if they reversed mine by mistake and it was installed correctly in the first place.

If you could tell me what the correct placement for a Santa Fe is, i would appreciate it.

Thanks! I removed the top gasket and it stopped the glass from rattling and the fire has been running great.

fataugie, the current manual from Sept 2008 states on page 32 "NOTE: There is no gasket on the bottom of glass." The castile insert manual from Aug 2009 says the same thing.

From my info I posted before in 2008, I was stating the opposite. Either that line in the manual was copy/pasted from the stove models, or they updated the inserts to match the stoves now. There is no picture in the current insert manual showing the two different gasket setups with serial numbers, but it could be in the service parts manual.
