Back in October we got lucky and found a newer used insert in excellent condition on Craig's List. However, I am on the lookout for a freestanding stove for the basement once we finish it off.

I am wondering if we can expect to see some newer used stoves available in the near future, and if so when would be the best time to start searching Craig's List regularly. I suspect that a lot of people that bought stoves due to increasing fuel prices will find that it doesn't suit their lifestyle or it isn't worth the effort and the mess.

Assuming that's correct does anyone have any educated guesses as to when they might start showing up in the classifieds?

Thanks,
~Cath

I've been surfing there fairly regularly, and I can't see much of a pattern. In many cases it's people who want to remodel and take out the stove, so it could happen any time of the year. There are some nice units that come up from time to time, but we ended up hitting the Lowe's sale for a new Century.

Luck of the draw sometimes. If there is stove out there that is perfect, just be ready to move quickly.

I agree they could become available anytime...just keep reading the Pennysaver and those other free newspapers you find in the front of grocery stores.

Bought my Keystone off of Craigslist in August, seems totally random! Sold my Jotul Combifire on Craigslist late September. I figured that was agood time to list it since people were starting to think about the upcoming winter yet they still had time to do the install.

Generally the worst time to buy anything is when the demand is high. I always try to sell a stove from Sept-Nov.. The 3CB was on craigslist in late Sept. for about 3 hrs. and there were several offers at my asking price. Based on this experience, I'd suggest the best time to buy is from Jan to August, but there are always exceptions. Just remember that in an urban area there is often a lot of competition. Snooze and ya may lose.

Hi Cath, just wondering if you considered posting under "items wanted" section on c-list. I have used this with pretty good results.

Thanks for the responses. The consensus seems to be that it's fairly random, which is what common sense would suggest.

I wouldn't mind haunting Craig's List too much except the geographic breakdown in my area is poorly done and there is a lot of overlap so looking for anything can be pretty time consuming.

Thanks for the reminder to check the local Pennysaver. It's easy to forget that in this day and age of Craig's List and Ebay.

I've never posted anything on Craig's List before. This might be a good way to get my feet wet.

Regarding ESW stoves, I haven't ruled them out but I would really like a soapstone stove for the basement.

Cath, I found a tool for searching craigslist that will speed up the time needed to check multiple areas called craigshelper.

http://www.craigshelper.com/

You can set up a search, then bookmark it, then go back and click through the different areas pretty easy.

Anytime--just keep looking. Newer used is still used and never fetches the same value as new.

Keep checking Craigslist. In my opinion, middle to late summer is the best time to find a deal. So far, my brother bought an Avalon Olympic for $250 2 years ago (brass door and all the trimmings), and late last summer we found my Avalon Rainier for $75! The Olympic needed a cleaning and a paint job, but my Rainier looked like it had never been fired. Like someone else had mentioned, be ready to move if you see something. Good luck!

As a side note, I just checked Craigslist here, and found the same stove my neighbor has, a HUGE cat, for $900. It's a steal for THAT price. I've seen this thing burn, it's a monster...nice stove for a fair price.

I've also been looking for a fairly new used stove. I've been checking both craigslist and ebay. If ebay is any indication, the number of stoves listed is always highest in the fall and early winter. As Be Green notes, I suspect prices are also highest during that period but I don't have a very good handle on that. I'm looking for something pretty specific (a Jotul F3CB) so the number of these stoves at any moment isn't all that great. I just missed one on ebay last Saturday in the last four minutes of the auction. Dang!
