I really wish pellet manufacturers would

I use to get my pellets from a mom and pop grain store too (for a couple years) and then this year they changed brands and they were horrible. One ton I bought from them, I actually found bags that had been ducted taped and when you got them home they were ruined. Let's just say I didn't use them anymore. I started buying Pennington from Walmart and they burn hot but are the dirtiest burning pellets I have ever seen. I went to get some pellets from Walmart this weekend and as I was looking for a parking spot, I noticed several pallets sitting on the sidewalk, in the weather, and unprotected. Let's just say I then went to Lowe's. The kicker is that Lowe's around here sells Pennington too. I just want this winter to end!! I am tired of fighting crap pellets. In this area, I feel like I have no choice when it comes to pellet brands!!

I sell about 900 tons a year and they all stay outside
only covered with the pallet cover they come with.

Running thru 40 truck loads - I can't imagine they stay out doors for long! Quality pellets are wrapped well enough but not well enough to stay out doors - season to season.

we keep enough so we dont run out
so sometimes a pallet will be out there for over a month or two Rain snow or shine.
Very few but if a bag is wet we replace it.
We normal burn the wet bags in our own stoves at the store or home when we get them.

I just came back from a local farm/tack shop where they sell stoves and pellets. They have a pallet of pellets out front. She said they just unloaded that off the truck and that is all that was left of the shipment....in fact, were unloading directly from the semi to customers trunks and pickups. These aren't sitting out for too long.

I just bought a ton of Comfy Cozys from Paris Farmers Union off a factory wrapped pallet, two days after we got 10" of snow with almost 2" of rain right behind it. Not a wet bag in the bunch; & other than being a bit high in ash, they are burning great.

When I bought my stove I ordered the pellets too. When they delivered the stove for the install they had my pellts too. Each skid had what I think they called a cap? coveng them this was like a big plastic bag covering for the whole skid and barring any holes looks like a good way to keep em from the elements. I have no storage building yet so I leave the caps on and bought a couple tarps to cover them and has worked well so far.

When I buy a ton of pellets, I ALWAYS require that the pellets have the factory wrap over the
entire pallet. If the pellets are stored outside, with the factory wrap, they will be ok. I just recently
went to pick up a ton of pellets from my local feed mill and they tried to give ma a pallet that
wasn't wrapped. There was moisture on the bags and as I started to feel the bags, a few were
frozen at the corners. Moisture apparently gets into the bags through the bags "breather"
holes.
